As long as I can remember, I have wanted to see the Sydney Opera House. The building had always captured my imagination as being completely in defiance of all the laws of large buildings (which say, of course, that all sides must be either stone or glass, and only right angles are allowed, with the exception of turrets). It was fanciful and graceful and majestic - and all this I could tell simply from looking at photographs.

I have seen the Sydney Opera House. In real life. And I was awed, silenced, by the creative, determined genius that decided he could accomplish such a feat.

I simply cannot communicate how fulfilling the experience was. Imagine waiting for something your whole life, and finally getting it. You almost don't quite know how to process it, because you're so used to wanting it that you don't know how to have it. It's some kind of shock, I'm pretty sure.

That goes on Becky's Lifetime Top Tens (which I have currently been assembling on this trip. Right now I've added New Year's, the Opera House, Milford Sound, and diving in the Great Barrier Reef to the list. At this rate it's going to be more like the Top 1000).

As a side note, we had a contest daily for the best Opera House photo of the day. Because, you literally cannot go anywhere in Sydney that's remotely touristy without getting a different, equally intriguing view of the building. In my opinion, the overall winner was this one I took with the rainbow behind it.
