Siblings reunited
Nessy is very pleased to see her brother who has been wandering round China for the last month. OK, we know we promised lots of great pics for you of Christmas and New Year, but we've had a bit of a disaster! The nice lady in the internet cafe corrupted Pete's memory card for us and lost half of the photos! On top of that, we have recently discovered that the remaining photos (burnt onto CD) have made their way up to Chiang Mai (1000 miles from here, in Charlie's possesion!). All is not lost though, we managed to salvage quite a few photos from Charlie's camera and from the people we met over the holidays. Hopefully Charlie will take good care of our photos and you can all see them when we return. Having said all this, the photos we do have are still great and hopefully you'll get a good idea of the time we had!
Here follows how we got from Mumbai, in India, to Koh Phan gnan in Thailand for the festivities!
Singapore
First of all we had a connecting flight to Bangkok from Changi airport (which has a cinema, swimming pool etc. which we are really excited about enjoying) in Singapore. This is where we realised we (Pete) had made
And they're off!
We had a lot of booze to catch up on, and this special horse racing game did the trick! a boo boo several hours earlier. When the nice lady at Mumbai airport absently asked if we would like her to check our luggage in all the way to Bangkok, 'WE' said 'No thankyou'. Because then we could have our toothbrushes etc. for the 11 hour wait in Singapore. So when we stroll through immigration on our way to collect our baggage and toothbrushes, we realise that we are now cursed with our huge backpacks outside the airport! With our flight 16 hours away, and no checking-in for another 8 hours, we pulled out our trusty sleeping bags and slept on the cold, hard floor next to the check-in desks (ear plugs are amazing!). When we woke up, we were surrounded by people who chuckled and said goodbye when they left- as if they had really gotten to know us over the last few hours!
Anyway, when we finally checked our bags back in we went for an explore of Singapore and started to get really excited about the next few months in South-East Asia, especially the new world of food that was about to open up to us!
Singapore seems great, but we reckon you'd run out of things
Elvis had left the building!
The lights are on, but there's nobody home. to do in 2 days! (Unless you're shopping mad)
Thailand
We land in Thailand at around midnight and are aiming to meet Nessy's brother Charlie in a youth hostel somewhere in Bangkok. Luckily Charlie has emailed us some excellent instructions of how to find him by bus. Unluckily, the buses have stopped running and the taxi drivers dont understand English very well! After a lot of anxiety we do manage to find the place and are greeted by a rather bubbly Charlie who comes thundering out of an alleyway with the promise of beer and whiskey and English people on the roof. Sure enough, we all go up to the roof to enjoy a game of 'horseracing'- an excellent drinking game- and get steamin willy beamin.
Bangkok
We really like Bangkok! We spent a couple of days here- going on sky trains, going to the cinema (to see James Bond at last!!), going to ko san road for some street food, to mingle with lager louts and to politely decline a visit to the 'ping-pong' shows! The shopping in Bangkok is as good as its reputation and we want to come here on holiday one
The train!
These guys shared some beers with us on the train down to Surat Thani (keeping the whole carriage awake until 4am!) day when we can take lots of stuff home! (And buy you all lots of nice pressies of course).
Surat Thani
We didn't actually spend any time in Surat Thani- we just got a train there from Bangkok in order to catch a ferry over to the island. The train ride was fun, and comfy and we made lots of friends with some English teachers from Bangkok.
We had just missed a Typhoon in the region so the sea was really choppy and we were all thinking "Tsunami! Tsunami! Tsunami!" But there was none, and we had a trouble free, if a little rainy and rocky, ride to Koh phan gnan.
Koh Phan Gnan
Finally we arrive on the island and enjoy a bumpy ride aover the hills to the other side of the island. We stay in a little bungalow for two on the beach (and Charlie has to sleep on the floor like a good boy). Next morning we sort out the bungalow next door for Charlie all to himself and we set up shop for our holidays!!
