roval pavilion
home sweet home.....right Jan. 7:
Good news: friendly red-head has been identified…. His name is Jackson and Whitney, Alison and I plan to act like we new that from the beginning. So today was our tour of Brighton and the Royal Pavilion. The school got a chartered bus and a tour guide to take us around for an hour all through Brighton. It was SO neat—I’m fairly certain that I’m in love with the town. The best part of it all is that there are actually 3 different parts of Brighton that were all cities of their own at one point. Brighton, Hove, and Rottingdean---and they all seem so different. Especially Rottingdean……. Except for the cars, when you first look at it you feel like you went back a few hundred years in time. It’s a tiny little town with the stone houses- each of them having their own little garden tucked behind the house and stone walls around the edge of much of the property. There are little tiny, curvy the cut in between the houses. It is just the neatest things. And on the main road there are little teas houses and pubs that are 500 and 600 years old. The whole town used to me a smugglers village so there are these old tunnels that come straight from the sea into the cellars of some of the houses….and those literary buffs our there- Rudyard Kipling lived and died in this little town. The whole little place is set into the South Downs hills- it seriously looks just like a painting. Then once you get into Brighton and Hove- which pretty much just run together now- there are lines and lines of old townhouse developments that were built for the rich people in the 1800s b/c Brighton was the “fashionable” place for the upper class to “holiday” (there’s a british word for you……holiday as a verb). These townhouse developments are along the water ……I think I’d probably give my right arm to live in one 😊 we actually got to see the house that Lawrence Olivier lived in- he got a sign on the door. The neatest thing about Brighton- Hove is that you can see layers of history all through it. Like you’ll see rows and rows of the 1800s town houses and then turn a corner and find a 16th century church that is now just sitting in the middle of a very modern city. Or when you are walking down the wide streets you can turn off to these little lanes that are curvy and sometime cobbled where you’ll find old stone buildings and classic English architecture. It’s just fantastic. The piece de resistance, however, would have to be the Royal Pavilion…..built for King George IV before he was king. It is unbelievable to look at and almost impossible to describe- especially when you realize that this wasn’t his full time home……it was just a vacation home. But some of us decided that if we pool our resources careful we might live there when we get older 😊 after the tour me, Alison, lee, matt, zanette, Jamie, and Ashley went wandering around Brighton to find food. We finally found a cheap pizza place near the water but we mostly just settled on it b/c we were tired of fighting our way through the wind. Once you get down near the sea you sort of feel like you need to hold onto something the keep from being blown over……it was great. After pizza me, matt, lee, Allison and Jamie went to the pier to look around. There is a huge arcade and lots of little food stands and all the way at the end there is a little carnival. Once you got all the way to the end of the pier though I had to pull myself with the railing to look off the edge b/c the wind was blowing so hard. On the way back was saw a sign for a karaoke pub so we decided to go watch for a little while to get out of the wind but so one was really singing so we didn’t stay there too long. We had another pajama party at the dorm only this time we watched mythbusters on brian’s computer. It was great. Class starts tomorrow…….
What I miss: zaxbys—yeah mom that’s directed at you….just had to tell me y’all for getting salads, huh? 😊
What I love: the Brighton Pier
