Months ago we booked ourselves on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb - here are a couple of the pics - which cost us a fortune!

The climb was incredible, 1439 steps, we climbed all the way up the bridge to the summit, and then back down the other side - we'll tell you more later we haven't got much time today!

(UPDATED)

This morning Paul drove us around Botany Bay and took us to Captain Cook's original landing site.

Later we met Charlotte and Dyce at 3.00pm for an early dinner in anticipation of our bridge climb.

We all congregated at 6.00pm for the climb, first of all we had to fill in the obligatory insurance forms that mean if we fall off, they are not held responsible and we cant sue! and then we continued to be breathalised to make sure none of the 9 people in our group had been drinking! Next we were given our boiler suits, baseball caps, small torches (to be worn on our heads, like miners!) for when it gets dark etc. Then we had a bit of training on how to
walk the steps and how to operate the safety harness that securely attaches us to the bridge.

We left the training area by 7.00pm to start the long climb. It wasnt as bad as we expected, we stopped every now and again to take in the views, Simon our guide took pictures at each stage of night fall. The first bit of dusk had a wonderful rainbow over the Opera House as rain fell in the distance- but luckily it stayed away from us the whole time.

The next stop was at the top as the city lights just started to come on- just like fairy lights once again, but this time we could see the whole city. Simon told us stories and facts about the bridge that we didnt know, like how it was constructed and how many people died while it was being made. This was done via head sets that we all wore, Simon's had a Madonna style mic. (You wont see these in the photos as we were sure to remove them so we didnt look daft!

The last leg as we decended the bridge was in proper darkness, and our little torches on our heads had to be turned on so we could see where we were stepping. This was probably the best bit for me, I love citys by night, they always look so attractive and spakly- I guess thats the magpie in me!

We reached the pavement by 10.00pm, all of us very hungry after the long walk, so we grabbed a bit to eat before heading our seperate ways home once more. We are staying in Coogee Beach at Paul and Gloria's house.

Winter Barbie
How do, fantastic pics, top times. It reminds me about my travels reading your journals, specially after I've been burning leaves in the rain in Crowthorne!! Incidently, not sure when you get back but I'm having a barbie to commemorate (?!?) when I got back from Oz. We had one when I did (Feb05) and it Snowed! so I'm gonna do it again and if you're back you can come along, all tanned up and everything!! Cheese Ben
