Golden Beach
the beach and a statue in the sand. Today we hung out with Amyn, Priya and Chandu. Amyn really wanted to go to the beach. After breakfast we took autorickshaws to a bus station -- trying to catch a bus to Mahabalipuram. We ended up getting on one to Guindy, where someone told us we could catch the bus we wanted there. The conductor told us to get off --- at some random intersectin of road. We ran across traffic and waited for a bus in the middle of nowhere. A guy waiting there was trying to help us -- and eventually we got on the right bus (where we saw the first other white people since we've been in Chennai). The trip to Mahabalipuram is about 2 hours by bus, so we would have gotten there at 11:40a, and Amyn needed to be back by 4:30pm at the latest to catch his flight. So we got off early to go to a closer beach - the golden beach, a private one that you get to by paying to go into the VGP Universal Kingdom. When we first got off we got coconuts, which the guy expertly chopped and put straws in to drink the milk. Then he cuts

The beach was nice. It was warm, but we sat in the shade awhile, and then went and played in the water, which felt nice. The ocean is sooo much warmer than it is at home. We had lunch there, which was a lot of fun, and then we waited for the right bus to take us back. We found out that there was a direct bus to T. Nagar (where we are staying). So getting back was fairly quick. We got off and walked through this market street selling everything. It was SO crowded. People everywhere. Amyn wanted to go to this shop to buy foodings for his friends back in the USA. We come some rock-candy-ish stuff that they serve at the end of meals -- it's really addicting and good!
We got back to the hotel, said good-bye to Amyn and Chandu and rested for a bit. In the evening Karen and Kaushik came and picked the three of

Waiting for our bus, we were trying to imitate the statue in the background. After we did, a bunch of other people started doing it and taking pictures too! us up to hang out and we went to Spencer's Plaza (this big mall) and wandered around a bit. Afterwards we went to Marina beach -- which is HUGE! But there was a lot of activity going on. Peoples got some peanuts and shot air guns at balloons. We got some roasted corn on the cob -- which is cooked over a flame and had a kind of sweet/spicy sauce rubbed on it. It was really really good. Kaushik, Adam and I stood in the warm waves. I could even see a few stars. It was a really nice way to end the evening.
Priya, Adam, and I came back and grabbed a quick dinner, then headed off to bed for our last night's sleep in India.
