After a couple of hours sleep and a brief stop in Cape Town, we arrived in Johannesburg, We had initially planned to spend 3 days visiting the Drakensburg Mountains, but in the end abandoned that idea as too rushed. Instead we were met at the airport by a very good friend of Gemma’s parents, Ted, who has lived in South Africa for the past 30 odd years. Setting the theme for the next couple of days we had lunch on the terrace by the pool, tried to get over our jet lag and had a long evening drinking South African wine chatting late into the night.

One incident that did make us realise that we were now in South Africa was that Ted’s house alarm went off for some reason. Once all had been turned off and as we settled back down to lunch, from around the corner an armed guard came running making sure all was okay. He had a smile on his face and was saying "look at my arms, I'm pumped up and ready to hit someone". The gun was scarier. Welcome to Africa!
