I caught an early train from Barcelona to Montpellier. It was slow, tedious going for nearly five hours. We finally pulled into the busy station around 130 where I grabbed a filled baguette for lunch. Even though it was at a crappy train station eatery, the baguette put every single hard, dry, tasteless one I had in Spain to shame. Why is it that the French can make tasty baguettes but when the Spanish try to copy them, they completely screw it up?

I stood in line for 30 minutes to get a reservation for the next leg. After securing my reservation I called the hostel in Nice to make a reservation since it was a Friday and I didn't want to get stuck without a bed. After calling, I had to wait about about an hour before I caught the next train.

The 3.5 hours from Montpellier to Nice were slow, and tedious (what's new?). It was well after dark when we pulled in and so I took some time in the fancy station to orient myself. As soon as I stepped out I was approached by people trying to get me to stay at their hotel/guesthouse, whatever. I thought it was a bit weird that they tolerate this sort of thing in Nice. Anyway, I ignored them and found my way to the Chez Patrick.

After getting buzzed in, I walked up the stairs to the hostel. The owner greeted me and I paid and then headed to my room. The place seemed empty, and when I got in the room I discovered that it nearly was. The only other person at the hostel was a guy named Luis who hailed from Mexico.

I dumped my bags in the room and set off to find some dinner. I settled on a nearby kebab place and I took the food back to the hostel. After eating I talked with Luis a bit about his experiences in Italy and then I headed out again to get a phone card. I found one for 7 euros and took it over to a phone booth to call home.

I spent about an hour on the phone with my mom and sister taking care of details for their visit to Rome. While I was on the phone, two groups of guys got into a fight nearby and it was loud enough that my sister could hear it through the phone. Suffice to say, I don't think the description "Nice is nice" is very appropriate.

After the phone call I headed back to the hostel and talked with Luis a bit more before going to bed because there was absolutely nothing going on. Yay.

Stay tuned for Venice.

Nice has good pizza sold out of food trucks, but they're prob only operating daytime, so you would've missed them. And good bocce players, but also only in the afternoon
