Such a perfect day here in Strasbourg. The weather was perfect, and after having breakfast we headed to the parking garage to get the car and head out for some sightseeing. Being that we were so close to the border of Germany, we decided to take a ride along the wine route. It was very picturesque with miles and miles of vineyards. We stopped at a local wine tasting facility and walked around a bit before heading back to Strasbourg.

Luckily we found a parking spot and walked to an area known as La Petite France to find a place for lunch. It’s quite a neat area laced with canals and half-timbered homes and cobblestone streets. This area is for pedestrian traffic only so it is easy to wander through. We found a lovely restaurant in the square and had a French onion soup and flambaie along with a glass of local wines for the ladies, and beer for the men. The real highlight was the lemon glacé topped with whipped cream…yum! Thank God we have a lot of walking to get around this area!

We had spotted a restaurant the night before that we wanted to try so we asked the concierge if she would make a reservation for us for dinner. Unfortunately it was closed because it was Sunday, and we soon found out that most of the others were also closed. After checking on line I found some that were open near the cathedral. The Cathedral de Norte-Dame is magnificent. The building of the delicate Gothic style cathedral was begun in 1176, and was not finished until 1429. It truly is difficult to describe how large and beautiful it is. It is the center of much of the activity in Strasbourg.

After a quick recharging of our batteries back at the hotel we went back out seeking a place for dinner. It is so very amazing how much quieter it is around the city today. Nice not to be constantly jogging along with people when we walked. After checking out a few places we settled on one that was recommended by one of the local shop owners. We ordered some local wine and then tried to decipher the menu. The stafl was very helpful and we finally settled on pork shank. John and I had the one prepared with potatoes and sauerkraut, while Diane and
Ray had theirs with Munster cheese. The meal was spectacular, and enough to feed at least two people. It was a lovely way to end our visit to this beautiful city.

Tomorrow, we head out for Bastogne, Belgium, with stops at Hagenau, France, and Bitche, France, both WWII battle sites, and also WWI Marginot line locations.
