This morning we woke from a 10 hour sleep refreshed and ready for another day. After enjoying a lovely breakfast that had been prepared by the Inn keeper, (she lost money on John), we headed out to visit the Chateau of Langeais, first built in 1465 by the King of France, Louise XI. It is the centerpiece of the town and is known to be one of the most imposing looking fortresses of the Middle Ages. It was, however, built mostly for show. The chateau towers over the little town, and has a moat, drawbridge and turrets. It has been said to have been the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle. We entered through the drawbridge and explored three stories of rooms which include all of the period furnishing. After strolling through the gardens, we made the perfunctory Cunningham bathroom visits, (I swear there isn’t a one they haven’t missed), then headed off for our next destination, Le Roque Gageac, where we will be spending the next two nights.

The drive today was considerably less stressful with beautiful rolling hills, and miles and miles of farmland. We stopped for lunch at around 1:00 in the quaint little town called Argenton. As usual the menu was all in French and the only thing we could easily decipher was a hamburger. The wait staff didn’t speak a lick of English, but we managed to get our wishes across. After a delicious lunch, and an excellent local red wine, we headed out for Gageac. Except for a construction delay, the ride was mostly uneventful. I say mostly. About 15 kilometers from Gageac, the road narrowed to about 20 feet, and became very winding, with a cliff off our right. Buses were coming from the opposite direction, and how we didn’t hit them or the cliff, I don’t know. Diane was catatonic in the back seat, with little whimpers coming from her.

We finally arrived at our B & B,and after getting situated, we headed out to dinner at a recommendation from our inn keeper. He said it was a food truck at the bottom of the mountain, but you needed reservations, and the food was excellent French cuisine. He didn’t disappoint. The food was excellent, and the local wine was superb.

Back at the Inn now, finishing the blog and hitting the sack. See you tomorrow.
