I'm getting used to rest days. No early start, a hearty breakfast at our hotel and, most importantly, no having to pack up everything and lug it back down to the bikes.
I wasn't quite sure what to do today as I had looked around town for a couple of hours last night. In the end I started by going to the one landmark I didn't see, and that was the Linz Castel. It currently houses a technology, culture and art museum. It sits high up on a hill (of course) and there are some old fortifications around it. Some great photos of the Danube and surrounds.
After the castle I made my way to the Botanic Gardens. I find it strange coming from Melbourne that you have to pay to get into the gardens. It was the same in Frankfurt. I guess that's just standard over here? That being said the gardens themselves were quite impressive, not as expansive as ours but they certainly crammed a lot into the space they had. There was a green house where they grew chillies. They had the Catalina Reaper chilli there which has a rating of 10++++ out of 10. I
think that might even give you a run for your money Doreen!
I left the gardens in search of lunch and then just casually rode around town.
It's amazing how little distance you have to go for the feel of the place to change. Going up the hill towards the Botanic Gardens the houses were quite grand and large, in neat streets with expensive cars outside. To the east of the Old Town, once you pierce the thin veil that separates the "haves" and the "have nots" things change pretty quickly.
Now for the fun part of the day. We had spotted a Go-Kart track on the way into town yesterday and decided to give it a go today. The carts are electric, not petrol like in Melbourne and the indoor track was just crazy. It was in a renovated old warehouse and the track went up hill on a ramp and then doubled over itself before coming back down to ground level. When you check in for the race you are weighed and the engines are automatically tuned to counter any weight advantage so the races are fair. We had picked the "sports" option which meant
the karts had a top speed of 50km/h. The 10 minute race session we had was just between Jeff (Roubaix Jeff) and myself (Mayhem Mark). We had an enormous amount of fun and its harder than it looks, your arms are quite sore at the end of the time and we were quite puffed too. The winner is actually the person with the fastest lap time.
We went back to the hotel after that to shower and rest up a bit before dinner. We're back on the road again tomorrow heading to Grein which is about 60kms down river towards Vienna, that's smack on our perfect distance.
Distance travelled today: Didn't take the Garmin with me, it was a rest day.
Distance travelled so far: 2,246kms
What's that I hear you say, "Who won the Go-Karting?" well, modesty prevents me from saying, but that little bald bloke drives pretty quick!
Note: The Blog site I use has just moved all of the photos (literally millions of them) to a new web server and they are having teething issues which is why yesterday's and today's photos wont load. I'll load them separately on facebook until it's fixed.
