Ione, WAIone, WAIone, WA

Gale is braiding my hair. The view is just so beautiful
We hated to leave our hotel in Ione, WA. It was such a beautiful setting with the Pend Oreille River right outside our door and the access to the river was so convenient on the private dock. Kevin tried fishing but to no avail…the owners said the water was cold and full of glacier and snow melt making fishing difficult. This did not stop Kevin from trying. We took off this morning at 9 am from the hotel and headed out into a brisk chilly ride. The wind was not our friend and kept us aware of its presence all day. The route was flatter than other days of biking with some rolling hills and a few short climbs. We rode 56.2 miles, elevation gain of 1,586 feet and maximum grade was 6%. The countryside was beautiful as we followed along the Pend Oreille River for much of the day. Lots of tall pine trees lined Route 2 and gave us a break from the wind. There are a lot of cattle ranges and horses in this part of Washington. We passed through the Kalispel Indian Reservation in Washington and Barry was almost attacked by 3 dogs. He was last in our bicycle line we heard the dogs barking and running towards us. Phil and I took off and yelled back to see if Barry was ok. He much appreciated our help with this situation. Oh by the way, the dogs backed off and he was ok. We did see a Bison herd on the reservation. We are quite sure these are not free range bison. Kevin found a few more fishing lakes along the way and was able to throw a line in. He especially liked Yocum Lake. He had to off road up on ridge and had spectacular views of the Pend Oreille River. We were about 5 miles from Priest River when it started raining. We were anxious to get to the hotel but still stopped at the Welcome to Idaho sign and posed for pictures with our bikes. It is amazing how crazy you can be when you are out in the wilderness. We made it to our hotel just in time before the sky opened and it started raining really hard. Once again sweet Gale made dinner in the RV (commonly referred to as the Snack Wagon) for all of us and it was delicious. Our bellies full we are in for the night and looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.
