Beautiful sunny day in Riggins, Idaho almost 90 degrees!!! Drove to White Bird, Idaho to meet up with our outfitters Hammer Down for a day of fishing on the Snake River in Hell’s Canyon. The deepest part of this river gorge is 7,993 ft, which makes it the deepest river gorge in North America. It borders the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The magnificent Seven Devil’s Mountain Range stands high above the canyon on the Idaho side. There are some crazy rapids in this canyon. The outfitters use a jetboat and go over those class 3 and 4 rapids with easy. However there is quite a bit of bouncing and splashing but gives you quite a thrill. We saw several rafters on the Snake today and I thought I would much rather be in this boat riding the rapids. Our guide, Homer, was excellent and knew a lot about the canyon. You almost felt like you would get swallowed up by those canyon walls. The Snake River runs all the way across the state of Idaho and part of Wyoming. Kevin and I have fished the Snake in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming several years back. Today we were catching small mouth bass of all sizes and Rainbow Trout very frequently. Kevin was really catching the most smallies. Then the big excitement for me today was when I reeled in the Sturgeon! It was about 36 inches long and looked just like a little shark. You are not allowed to take the Sturgeon out of the water so I posed in the water with my catch. I was feeling pretty good about myself until Tom in our group caught a 5 foot Sturgeon. It was fun to watch. I will include a picture of his catch. We had to drive over a very long uphill and I mean uphill gravel road to get to the place where the boat was docked called Pittsburg Landing. On the way back our new truck started making noises and they were not good noises. So we had to cancel our plans for tomorrow so that we can go to the Chevy Dealership about 40 miles from us. Good news…the truck is under warranty. Praise God!
