Stanley to Redfish Lake

Fly fishing Redfish River

May 3, 2021

Such a wonderful view from every window in this cabin, it is a great way to wake up in the morning. I had my coffee looking at the Sawtooth mountains and Salmon River. This could NEVER get old. The day started out cool and we thought a dip in the hot springs would be a good idea. There is one right off the road but only two people can fit in it and the parking lot was full. So, we headed out to Redfish Lake which was at 6547 ft this is only about 300 feet higher than Stanley but the Lake was still frozen in places. The outdoor temps have been in the 40’s and 50’s and it was mostly sunny today. The lake was beautiful and sits right below the Sawtooth Mountains. The Lodge has not opened yet for the season but it is very nice and looks like a place I would like to visit again. Redfish Lodge offers a lot of summer activities including boating, swimming, hiking, and horseback riding. We saw several bald eagles on our way to Redfish and I took a great deal of pictures. Kevin got his Idaho fishing license and we headed back to a stream near Redfish Lake on Redfish River. I always thought fly fishing was so beautiful and graceful until I tried it…there was nothing poetic or graceful about my fly fishing. I will stick to bait casting. My brother, Jeff, made Kevin several flies to use on this trip. Kevin used those and caught 2 fish right off the bat! One smaller steelhead and then a larger steelhead, it was great fun. All steelheads are to be caught and released. They look like Rainbows except they have a dorsal fin and more red around the head and they seem to be much larger. All in all, Kevin caught 3 steelheads today and the largest one was around 26-28 inches. While Kevin was fishing, I decided to take a little hike in the area. It was a snowmobile trail and there was still some deep snow in the shady areas. I was graced by presence of several Ospreys. I have never seen one in the wild and was excited to get pictures of them. We were going to get the telescope out tonight and look at the night sky but it became cloudy and…no stars….perhaps
