We finally got round to doing some proper touristy activities the other weekend and dragged ourselves out of bed at some hideously early time Sunday morning for the 2 hour train ride to the beautiful Blue Mountains - but why are they called the Blue Mountains I hear you cry?!..well the mountains are densely populated by oil bearing Eucalyptus trees. The atmosphere is filled with finely dispersed droplets of oil, which, in combination with dust particles and water vapour, scatter short-wave length rays of light which are predominantly blue in colour.
Ta da…I read my tourist guide.
One of the main attractions are the 'Three Sisters' - which are basically 3 rock formations. There's an Aboriginal legend around it..something along the lines of 3 sisters fell in love with 3 brothers, forbidden to marry, war ensued, got turned to stone, can't be turned back, doomed for eternity, sadness abounds, gullible tourists come to take pictures, happiness abounds …I may of speed read that part of the guide.
There's a cable car ride across one of the gorges - the carriage has a glass floor which turns from opaque to clear so you can see all the way
down to the bottom. Fantastic unless you have vertigo..but then what would you be doing on a cable car in the first place?!?
We also went to the Blue Mountains National Park and saw lots of kangaroos….and little roo's…awww….. part of the National Park is currently being ravaged by bush fires so they've probably all been burnt to a crisp now . Roo burger anyone??
We also treated ourselves to a day off work last week too (yeah yeah we know what you're all thinking! We do work!) and went to Watson Bay for the day...36 degrees...phew! Watson's Bay is apparently the place to be on Boxing Day as you can see all the yachts set off for the great Hobart race. As you can see from the photo the views are great (the flies were not so great) although am not sure we will make it out of bed before 8am Boxing morning to get there, might have to just watch in on TV...or if we're really lazy we'll just read about it in the paper.
In the evening we went to see the local band 'They call me Bruce!!!' play (our first Bruce!), had a
top night dancing. The pom basing is now starting in earnest though what with the Ashes kicking off - suddenly we're both being patriotic cricket supporters...what's that all about?!?
The other pics are from the IAG Christmas Family Fun Day which I organised…see I do actually do something at work rather than just emailing friends! Helen came along as my 'family'….I suspect she was wooed by the free bar rather than the fat sweaty guy in the Santa outfit but you never know!
Oh for my Nortel mates I saw Lisa the night before I went to the Blue Mountains….strangely on the Sunday I ended up going out with a bit of a hangover and a severe lack of sleep. That girl drinks like a fish! You can take the girl out of Oz....
Right I'd better go because I'm doing this at work(!!!!) - to my old bosses reading this I NEVER did anything like this whilst working at Nortel.... :-)
Love to you all!
