Rome to Massa Lubrense

We checked out of the apartment in time for our 9:30am transfer to Villa Bouganville in Masse Lubrense on the Sorrento (Amalfi) Coast.

Our driver Tommaso dropped us off at Villa d’Este at Tivoli for a walk around the gardens and villa. This site is on a very steep slope and all of the fountains are powered by gravity. After entry, we walked through the Courtyard into the villa, through the Cardinal’s Apartment, Hall of the Fountain and Hall of Hercules and then out onto the Gran Loggia with a view of the garden. Walking down the steps, I kept to the left and walked past the Fountain of Rometta, the Hundred Fountains and down to the Fish Ponds which are 4m deep. Other scenic spots were the Rotunda of the Cypress, Fountain of Diana of Ephesus, Fountain of Neptune and Fountain of the Organ. I walked up to the top of this for a scenic view of the garden and look at the 3 grottoes behind it. Up more stairs was the Fountain of Tivoli (or Oval Fountain) and then the Cardinal’s Walk back up to the villa.

We ate a quick piece of pizza for lunch and left at 12:30pm to continue our drive to Massa Lubrense. At Naples, we drove past Vesuvius and along the coastline. Just before Sorrento we stopped at limoncello shop, where we had some tastings.

Before Massa Lubrense, we stopped at a supermarket to buy supplies for the week and dinner for that night.

We arrived at the villa at 4:30pm, where Tina met us to guide us through the villa and give us information.

Dinner was a tubular pasta with Napoletana sauce.
