Today we had booked a 4-hour tour of La Masseria, a family-owned and operated farm in Massa Lubrense, a village located about 5 miles to the southwest of Sorrento. The pick-up point for our group of 20 people was about a 10-minute walk from our apartment on Via degli Aranci, and we arrived slightly early for the scheduled 3:30PM rendezvous with the minibus and driver that would deliver us to the farm. Our driver today, a grumpy-looking guy who looked to be in his 60s, turned out to be quite a character. Dee noted straight away that his fly was at half-mast (so I quickly dubbed him "Flyboy"), and he was clearly agitated at a few late stragglers (and some no-shows), while all the while muttering expletives in Italian. But the real fun began during the ... read more

Today was a rest day so we walked down to the water and along the coastal path into Marina della Lobra, where we explored the restaurants and mini-markets. The rest of the day was spent at the villa, relaxing and looking at the view.... read more

We checked out of the apartment in time for our 9:30am transfer to Villa Bouganville in Masse Lubrense on the Sorrento (Amalfi) Coast. Our driver Tommaso dropped us off at Villa d’Este at Tivoli for a walk around the gardens and villa. This site is on a very steep slope and all of the fountains are powered by gravity. After entry, we walked through the Courtyard into the villa, through the Cardinal’s Apartment, Hall of the Fountain and Hall of Hercules and then out onto the Gran Loggia with a view of the garden. Walking down the steps, I kept to the left and walked past the Fountain of Rometta, the Hundred Fountains and down to the Fish Ponds which are 4m deep. Other scenic spots were the Rotunda of the Cypress, Fountain of Diana of ... read more

We have decided to stay an additional day in Marina del Cantone as the weather is perfect and it is such shame to just leave. So today we have hired a 5.7 metre RIB with a 40hp and set out to explore the coast. We quickly started to find some special places and some only attainable by boat. After a quick drive by of Positano we decided to stop in Amalfi for a caffé and cake. After getting back on the boat we headed back towards Positano to an outcrop of islands where we anchored in the ley of the islands for lunch and a swim. We finally got the boat back at about 4 very satisfied with the day’s adventure. So a quiet dinner out tonight and on the road again tomorrow.... read more

Today shaped up as a day of driving with a planned 200km stint. This has exploded into 300km with all the side trips and getting around Napoli. We started off in the morning heading for Napoli with the intention to have a look around Napoli and then head to Sorrento and Marina del Cantone. We decided we were making good time and so stopped at Gaeta to try the water and take some photos. Back in the car and arriving in Napoli we got totally out of our depth with the insane traffic, it was the same as driving in New Delhi. We found a certified Pizza Restaurant and can now tick that we have eaten a real Napoli Pizza. Finally, we got on the road to Sorrento and while the rest of the trip went ... read more

A day trip to Massa Lubrense and Amalfi Coast. It was sunny day, the sun woke up at 5.00 am and me at 6.00 am. We (Me and my Indian friend Pravin) had to catch the train of 8.21 am to Sorrento, it takes around 1 hr 10 min to reach and the fare was 3 Euros 10 cent for the Day ticket by which we can manage to return back the journey on the same day, quite cheap... . We go through the outskirts of Naples - which is still controlled by the mafia and the home of pizza - and around Mt Vesuvius, which erupted in 79 A.D., covering the town of Pompeii in 7 meters of ash. We reached Sorrento around 10.00 am and my flat mate Antonio with car was waiting for ... read more
