By 10 am the temperature was already in the thirties. After our morning coffee we settled into a shady spot under the chestnut tree in the backyard where there was a bit of a breeze, and were soon cooling off in the pool. Good time to do our laundry. We hung them outside and Marion’s was dry in less than an hour. I left mine out to dry when we left to meet friends from my teens in a town called Uden, about 30 km from Eindhoven. Everything seems to be that distance from here. It was so good to meet up with Cees and Henny, Ad and Herma, and Karla. Cees and Henny’s house is a real nice spot!

Cees and I many years ago rode our bicycles with full camping gear, surplus military stuff most of it, all around The Netherlands in ten days, covering what was if I’m not mistaken, about 1200 km or so. Today he offered me a real Trappist beer from Belgium, that can only be bought right at the abbey during a visit that needs to be reserved in advance. One of the main distinctions between Trappist and abbey beers is that Trappist beer must be brewed at the abbey supervised by a monk, while abbey beer can be brewed away from the abbey commercially. My Trappist beer today is 10.2% alcohol and its price is €16 per bottle!! It’s a darker beer, tastes rather unique, and is a bit sweet. The bottle is unique, all Trappist beer bottles have a ring around the neck of the bottle with the words “Trappist beer”, have no label because there’s no need to advertise because of its limited availability, and have a cap with location and alcohol content on it.

It was time to go before we realized and we agreed to meet again soon, either in the Netherlands or Canada. On the way home we finally got some relief from the heatwave. An enormous thunder storm dropped the temperature from 42C to 21C, we could barely see our way home. I thought about my clean clothes on the outside line, but I should not have worried: our hosts had removed them and placed them in our room all neatly folded!

Houses here will likely take another two days or so to cool off, just on time for temperatures next week back in

So glad you are having a good trip!
That Trappist beer sounds good! It is going to be hot and with humidity, close to the forties for the next few days! Ingeborg and Jim are offering a space in their house for you to stay when you come down for my party. I will send their phone number on my cell. Glad you have access to a pool. Louise
