All You Can Eat?
Glynn just doesn't know where to start at the all you can eat curry buffet. Oh my God, oh my God, we're really here!! Who would have thought that just over a year the idea of travelling around the world hadn't even really sunk in and our ultimate goal of relocating to New Zealand seemed like just a pipe dream. But we're here and it's brilliant!
We left Singapore with full tummies as we had time before leaving for the airport ot nip back to Little India and enjoy an all-you-can-eat vegetarian curry buffet for just S$5 per head. Our flight wasn't due to take off until after 9pm but by 1pm we had eaten, checked out of our room and had nothing much worth hanging for so we headed to the airport early. We got the MRT all the way there and only had to change trains once, so it was dead easy.
Singapore Airport has to be one of the best airports I've ever been to in terms of user-friendly facilities. There were banks of free internet terminals situated all around the airport that allowed you 15 minutes at a time or longer if no-one was waiting, which we made good use of! We also noticed that there were free showers available

We can totally recommend the curry buffet at this place in Little India :-) for people waiting for connecting flights but my favourite freebie had to be the duty free shop that was handing our samples of Bailey's Caramel and Bailey's Mint to passers-by, so I made sure I passed by the caramel stand rather a lot :-))
Another excellent freebie was waiting for us by our departure gate, where we got to experience the wonders of a motorised foot massager. We'd seen these things in countless shops across Malaysia and there always seemed to be a happy looking potential customer having a go on one. Needless to say, when we saw the opportunity to get a free foot massage, we seized it with both feet! As well as being amazingly relaxing and feeling great on our feet, the massger was quite a good piece of socialising equipment. There was room for 2 people to have a go at a time so there was always someone else to talk to when we had a go (and we went back 3 times!). It came as a surprise to both of us that we had managed to kill 7 hours without even noticing!
On board the plane, we had great seats and we delighted
Grin and Bear It
Glynn and Jish get their paws massaged at Singapore airport (gate 20!) to see we had on-demand movies, tv and music to enjoy during our 8 hour first leg into Brisbane. The flight was smooth and it felt great to not feel so panicky about flying this time. Despite being very comfortable, neither Glynn nor I managed to get any sleep so by the time we landed in Brisbane, we were both feeling pretty shattered. We couldn't afford to get comfortable in the transit lounge though as our onward flight to Auckland was due to depart just 2 hours later.
We had good seats again on the next flight but once again couldn't setlle down for any sleep as the time difference meant it was broad daylight outside and everyone on the plane was wide awke. That didn't stop our bodies from feeling like it was the middle of the night and we were both starting to feel pretty terrible by the time we landed in Auckland about 3.5 hours later. In total we had been flying for over 11 hours but we had also jumped 5 hours forward in time. I guess we were experiencing our first taste of jetlag!
Still, we didn't have time to dwell on it
Thank God for Foot Massagers
If only they had these things on all long distance flights... too much as we wer being met at the airport by my mum's long-standing penfriend, Liz. After declaring to the bio-hazard control that we weren't smuggling in any evil moss or tropical fish, we were greeted by a smiling Liz, her husband Allard and her sister Pam (who was the only one of the three I had ever met, although I was about 8 at the time!). They kindly took us for a drink and we had a bit of a get-to-know-you session, although I apolgise wholeheartedly to them all for us not being up to our usual charming standard due to sheer fatigue. Pamela had a flight to catch home to Palmerston North so after she was safely on her way, Liz and Allard took us to their home in Auckland. They kindly invited us for dinner but Glynn and I could barely keep our eyes open. We did, however, enjoy taking a tour of their home and playing with their gorgeous labrador in the garden. Liz then made up a big tray of fresh fruit for us to take with us and then she and her husband drove us to our hostel in the city centre.

Feeling Fruity
Jish lends his size for scale against this huge platter of fruit we were given by Jude's mum's friend, Liz. And yes, it all tastes as good as it looks! staying at the City Lodge, a big hostel crammed full of people who seem to be longer term residents than in most of the hostels we've stayed. Our room is fantastic - ultra modern with an en-suite shower and toilet, a fridge and a kettle and the first wardrobe we've had in a long time. Although the bed is a touch on the soft side we were asleep before our heads even hit the pillows and boy did we sleep. When we awoke, it was 1pm the next day and we'd slept for over 13 hours. All worth it though because we're finally here - hooray!!
