We woke today to more heat. It seems it would only be a degree or two cooler today and the heat advisory was still in effect. Our granddaughter arrived around 10:30 am. Courtney is the oldest of our grandchildren and the only one we’ve spent extensive time with alone. As a young girl and later as a teenager, Courtney frequently spent time with us, a week or two during the summer. We have taken her to all sorts of historical places over the years: Washington DC, Vermont, Philadelphia, New York City and all over New Jersey. She stayed with us in California too where we had a grand time in Monterey, San Francisco, and the Redwoods. After our retirement she was grown and on her own so we have not seen her much for several years now. We miss her and she definitely has a special place in our hearts. So today when she arrived we got our much needed hugs first thing. We perused Yelp looking for a breakfast and lunch place and settled on Joe Snuffy’s in Abeline KS. This was about 11 miles west of us but there was nothing in Chapman. We picked a 4&1/2
David the photographer!
He’s the love of my life! star rated restaurant. We arrived and got seated in what I would describe as a busy country cafe. Half the patrons seemed to be tourists the other half local blue collar workers ready for lunch at 11:02, when we arrived. We reviewed the menu and the waitress took our ordered before Courtney mentioned that people in Kansas were not good judges of food and that we shouldn’t expect to much. No she hadn’t been here before but she said most of the food in Kansas was nothing special. We all laughed at her comment but it did help to set my expectations for our food. The food was just ok, certainly not befitting a 4 & 1/2 stars rated place. Both David and I thought Courtney’s comment certainly rings true, people in Kansas aren’t good judges of food!
Afterward we headed back to the trailer to visit. Courtney seemed to be dosing off from a shortage of sleep the night before and a full belly. We spent the afternoon watching a movie. I also gave her the Tanzanite earrings I’d bought in Tanzania last year. I’d bought all the granddaughters and daughters-in-law earrings and Courtney was the last to
receive hers. She seemed to like them and put them on right away. They looked really nice on her. I showed her the earrings I’d bought for me and we both wore our earrings as we headed out for dinner.
Tonight we thought we’d pick a more predictable restaurant, the Texas Road House. We all had a steak dinner. Steak use to be Courtney’s favorite dinner when she came visit all those years ago. It seemed she still had a big appetite for steak. While the dinner wasn’t anything extra, it was good and we enjoyed it. Courtney and I both had strawberry margaritas which were good too!
We headed back to the trailer, watched a little tv and Courtney headed for home with instructions to get a good nights sleep so she wouldn’t be so tired tomorrow. We were relieved when we got her text saying she was home safe.
