Tian Tan Buddha Lantau Island, the largest of Hong Kong's islands features Ngong Ping cultural themed village, 34 mts tall Tian Tan buddha statue also known as Big Budda, the Po Lin Monastery and its vegetarian restaurant, souvenirs shops and cafes.
I highly recommend to leave early for Lantau so as to avoid queues . We made a mistake by not booking tickets in advance and so we had to queue up to buy tickets and THEN again wait in line to board cable car. Online booking can be a smart option
There are 3 cabins av.aliable(standard and cristal bottom cabins and private cabins). Max. 8 people can accommodate in 1 cabin. We chose single ride standard cabin and descended by bus. Even though we visited on a weekday it almost took 2 hrs in queue, but once got seated in cabin it was all worth. The aerial panaromic 360 degree views of sky, land and sea were breathtaking with foggy weather, green mountains and south china sea below.I couldn't take my eyes away for a min. Also we got a bird's eye view of HK airport. It was aprox. 25min ride and just before I dethroned my cabin I got the 1st
Cable rideglimpse of big Budda. The sense of serenity cannot be described in words.
After this mesmerising experience we landed to this beautiful Ngong Ping cultural themed village. There are few cafes (
starbucks is available) and shops but we straight away headed to Po Lin Monastery's vegetarian restaurant as we heard a lot about it. Being a vegetarian, I was super excited to try food and thus I almost bought all items offered to me. To be frank the food was not upto my expectations and bit pricey, but I liked Spring rolls and dimsum the most. Trick should be, try one or two items on the menu and if you are comfortable with flavours you can always try more stuff.
Monastery architecture was beautiful but tourist are not allowed to enter the main hall where monks were performing their rituals.
Next I proceeded towards Tian Tan buddha statue which is aprox. 300-350 steps, actually I forgot my counts as I got engaged in admiring the statue rise with every step. Once I reached the top, views were outstanding. I can spend hours gazing the statue amist nature.
Away from the hustle-bustle of city this place comforts me with
HK Airport aerial view a chance to lay back and relax in my othrwise hectic itinerary.
STAY & TRANSPORT:
We are staying in Regal oriental hotel hongkong. The rooms here are quite spacious and we got the room with a mountain views. Buffet breakfast was amazing with good enough Indian food(sp. I liked khaman-dhokla, Gujarati delicacy). Also the hotel is having its own bus stop which comforts the traveller to roam around the city economically. This is how I made my way to Lantau Peak.
• Bus no.11 from regal oriental hotel bus stop to kowloon station.(Tung chung line/airport express) HK$ 5.1
• Train to Tung Chung for HK$17.4. On reaching Tung chung station search for Exit B, there is a big sign board guidance for Ngong Ping cable car station.
Also buses are available from station to Lantau Peak but i would insist on atleast one journey by cable car.
