Coogee Beach
Where i spent my first few days... or is it Silloth!?!? I arrived in Sydney after a short 4 hour flight i think from Fiji, i think 2 weeks there was enough. Got through customs fairly quickly and got my visa. Managed to haggle one of the airport shuttle guys down from $20 to $10 to take me to my hostel at Coogee Beach, Coogee is about half an hour from the city centre but i thought it would be better to stay there and chill for 4 days and go see all the main sites with Ross (mate from home) when he arrived. The Coogee area is nice, the street the hostel was on was the main street in Coogee and it was just lined with cafe's pubs and restraunts for about 500 yards, there wasn't really much to do there but i was told about a walk from Coogee to Bondi which had some "interesting art" along the way, the walk was indeed nice and took maybe an hour but the art was modern art - hence a load of crap, when i got to Bondi i was suprised how much smaller it was than id imagined but it was bloody busy, i had a wander around the shops and
Bondi Beach
Another disgracefull area, look at it, disgusting! along the beach for a few hours and then set of back to the hostel... this was the worst hostel id stayed so far simply because 98% of the people who were there had been so for 5 weeks or more and so they had there own little groups and were about as chatty as a brick wall! Also about 80% of them were Irish which i thought was odd. Anyway i spent most of my time there either wandering around aimlessly and relaxing, watching whatever film was being played on the DVD player, or drinking with the Welsh i met and another from London, oh the hostel is called the Wizard Of OZ - don't go there.
Monday came and Ross had booked us into the Wake Up hostel near the main rail station and about 5 minutes walk to the centre. This hostel is decent enough, very clean and modern and secure, also full of sociable people from all corners of the globe. The first day we walked all the way to the harbour and saw the Opera House and the bridge and checked out some of the shops, the second day we walked to the harbour again
and bought a combination ticket to the Aquarium which included a boat ride there and entry, as it turned out the Aquarium was not across the harbour but infact about 10 minutes walk from the hostel, and it wasn't very good. Day 3 Ross and another gy in our room headed to Bondi Beach for 20 minutes afterwhich the cloud rolled in and ruined it all - ha ha, and i woke up with a severe hangover and did sod all untill half 11 when i walked to Hyde Park in the middle of Sydney, checked out some shops and bravely decided to walk down Oxford Street which is meant to be the gay part of the city, and so it was, more openly gay than anywhere i saw in Amsterdam or San Francisco, the street is just full of gaybars and cafe's and porn shops, anyway the walk got rid of the hangover and i headed back to the hostel had a few drinks and hit the hay by half 10. Day 4 we awoke to a bloody chilly morning, apparently it had been snowing in Victoria over night and it started raining here as soon as we left
The bridge
With the mystery object in the distance the building, we got the bus to Bondi Junction and found a huge indoor shopping centre to entertain us for about 3 hours, didnt actually buy anything except a jacket potatao and a belt but it filled in a few hours, the last day we headed out to Bondi again with one of the guys from our room because it was nice and sunny again, only problem was that it was still blowing a gale (its been quite windy all week) and the sand was just blown all over us so i gave up and went in search of some food and an hour later went back to try find them but couldnt so i walked along the beach through the water which was actually really cold and then hopped on a bus back to the city which is where i am now, have just booked a hostel round the corner for saturday night and tonight i try to decide what i want to do this next week... im thinking of doing the bridge climb, the huge zoo here and maybe a day or two out in the blue mountains which are meant to be really good, then i will
Hyde Park
A great place to suffer with a hangover for a few minutes! probs start heading down to Melbourne somehow - im sure it will all fall into place somehow!
