7-14-18 Saturday. Constanza. The correct spelling is Constanta with a cedilla below the second t so is pronounced the way I spelled it. Constanța, historically known as Tomis (Ancient Greek: Τόμις), is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Romania. It was founded around 600 BC. The city is located in the Dobruja region of Romania, on the Black Sea coast. The Constanza Casino (finished in 1910) is a big, beautiful Air Nouveau building on the waterfront, at this time abandoned and neglected, is a major landmark. Across a long skinny park that follows the waterfront is a large well-kept Orthodox Church. Further inland and past a very vertical mosque with a medieval-looking minaret is the main square, Ovid's Market. Across the square from an unfinished and abandoned-looking modern concrete and glass building is the impressive structure of the Museum of National History which houses artifacts dating to antiquity. Constanza's history dates back to the Greeks, then the Romans. Up two flights of stairs from the archaeological exhibits and past stained glass windows was an exhibition of Durer etchings and a room of artifacts from the communist era which included mannequins of political prisoners in striped uniforms who were required to do hard
labor. Political prisoners were not executed but sometimes worked to death. In front of the museum is a bronze statue of the Roman poet Ovid, who was banished to Constanza by Augustus Caesar as punishment for having an affair with his wife (or so our guide said). Next to the museum is a covered excavation site with a balcony for viewing the Roman mosaic floor below, ancient amphora and other artifacts. In the early afternoon we were taken to Mamaia, the famous beach resort on the Black Sea, popular with Eastern Europeans. It was busy. Simon waded and I swam.
