Chingis Khaan Equestrian Statue
What an imposing site, very hard to imagine how huge this is!9.10pm flight from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar on Miat Airways.....bit sceptical but great airline.....served us a nice plain roll with a few filling ingredients.....suited us down to the ground after all the asian food over the last few days. Flight time was less than thought got into UB around 11pm....two drivers and guide (Chucka, Tovuu and Tseegi) there to meet us and transport us to the Kempinski Hotel.....a beautiful hotel....two nights here and our last night here on way back from safari. Chucka is our driver and ours is a big V8 Land Cruiser....glad we paid extra for these cars as the other option was a Russian van which would have taken us all....but we all laughed as we headed to the hotel and saw one....NO SPRINGS....and we have hundreds of klms through the Gobi Desert etc and then to the north of Mongolia. Friday morning....breakfast at Kempinski very good, loads of options...WINNING....set out and saw all the sights in town....National History Museum, Sukhbaatar Square, Chingis Khan Memorial Square, Gandan Monastery and Bogd Khaan Place Museum....lunch in typical Mongolian restaurant...surprisingly good with Mongolian BBQ as well as lots of other foods and salads to chose from then to the most fabulous traditional
concert....fabulous costumes, great singers and the most beautiful musicians....really worth seeing....quite handsome and pretty performers. Saturday morning heading off to begin our safari for 13 days around the Mongolian countryside heading down to the Gobi Desert first then heading to the lakes area in the north. First stop Terelj National Park which is only about 50klms east of Ulaanbaatar.....enroute stopping at the ginormous Chinngis Khaan statue out in the middle of the countryside....all made of stainless steel and overlooking his home town....a very imposing sight and photos do not do it justice. Roads not too bad yet! Once we arrived at the Dream Terelj Ger Camp we had a wonderful lunch...could not believe what they served up, chicken salad, pumpkin soup, chicken dish and dessert.......the food has been absolutely awesome....SO FAR! Settled into our ger and then headed further up the valley to visit a buddhist temple where they have meditation camps etc.....boy what a walk that was uphill nearly 6000 feet above sea level...you could certainly feel it. Heading down to the Gobi tomorrow 490klm drive.
