So after our "quiet" Friday night we had a very quiet Saturday. The morning was gone by the time I got out of bed. Trish cooked a wonderful breakfast but by 2pm we had all gone back to bed for more sleep. Later on we went for a walk down to Putney bridge, found a nice pub to stop for a few drinks then came home for dinner. Trish & Jussie showed off their culinary skills and cooked a rack of lamb which was to die for.
Sunday morning we were much more lively. We were up and on the move by ten for a touristy-ish day. We walked to Putney bridge and caught a big red double decker bus to Hyde Park corner. I got to sit up the front of the second floor, only had to throw a couple of kiddies down the stairs to get the cool seats, but no big deal, they'll mend. We made our way to Buckingham palace so I could get a few happy snaps of Lizzie's place. There were thousands of tourists there, lots of folks pushed up against the gates to see something, I don't know what. At one point Trish
was taking a photo of me outside the gates and this (apparently blind) family came and stood in front of me so they could get their photo outside the gates. So I photo-bombed them.
We walked down to Westminster Abbey, although we didn't go in, I'll do that another day. I saw Big Ben. We got there just in time to hear him ring his bells. From there we walked down the Thames and boarded a boat bar. There are a few boats that have bars on the deck where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine and watch the world go by. Well the sunshine was a bit off and on today. Jacket goes on, jacket goes off...all day. We made our way from the Thames to a cellar bar called Gordons. This is the oldest wine bar in London, and if I didn't have a couple of experts with me, I would never have found it myself. Just off a main road, down an alley, into the cellar. The first part of the bar we walked into was a normal room, but then we walked into the "dinning hall." It must have been a storage cellar at some
point. The roof was low and the walls were curved, like a big tunnel. It was very rustic. But the lunch was awesome. For 10 quid I had a lamb roast lunch that was so big I could barely eat it. Complete with gravy, mint sauce, yorky pudding and real veggies. Nom nom nom.
Finally we went for a walk through Soho and found a couple of really cool bars. The first one had black and white photos of the locals on the walls. These locals have their own stools and visitors are not allowed to use them. Sounds snotty, but it was cool. I don't know who their photographer is but they take great shots. And it made the place kinda homey, like Cheers but much cosier, hooghly! The next bar we went to was called "Aint nuthin but" and it was a cool little blues bar. I could have happily sat here all evening, but it was Sunday and some people have to work, and I had to up early for my tour. So we had a few drinks, listened to some tunes, then regretfully made out way home.
We returned via Putney bridge and stopped at Thai
Garden for dinner. Trish and Jussie are new to this area so they're still figuring out the good restaurants. I think we can say we have found their new Thai place. It was delicious! So far this English food is working quite nicely for me. I don't know why it has such a bad rep. ;-)
