Breakfast in Birmingham on the steps of the cathedral then some shoe shopping. Some people collect tea towels or magnets on holiday. Without meaning to, I am collecting shoes. My sandals I bought in Croatia to replace a broken pair had to be replaced in Birmingham.

The train trip was uneventful through some picturesque countryside and our hotel was again conveniently close to the railway station. Unfortunately I might have overdone the search for cheap hotels though. The best I can say is it is close to everything.

Cardiff Castle was redecorated extensively in the 1880s in grand style but dates back to Roman times. It was a pleasant hour or so with good audio commentary and a few photos taken. It was interesting to see they had owls and falcons to keep the rodents under control.

Then we hopped on the bus and did the city tour getting off at Cardiff Bay which had the amazing Millennium building as well as a bunch of stuff relating to Roald Dahl who was a local.

The Millennium stadium is quite literally just across the road from 'home'. We looked in the gates and gave the locals some coaching advice before hurrying to the pub for a pint and then on for a curry.

Today was the big day - we picked up the rental car and ventured forth. First stop was St Fagan's national history museum. Actually, it was an historic village and there was a food festival on. It was all very well done with lots of old houses, blacksmith, weaving loom, the castle and so on so we spent several hours there before venturing along the coast a bit further to Barry - that's a place - where we had an ice cream and a walk along the beach.

We then drove a bit further just because we could, before heading back into the city. The narrow roads and the big car (well yes, anything is big compared to a Swift) made life a little interesting at times, not sure how Linda will get out of the car park tomorrow - haven't told her it's her turn yet....
