Is it advisable for two 23 year old girls to go out partying in Tijuana or should we just day trip it?
I've heard a lot of scary stories about tourists getting ripped off/mugged/set-up/drugged-up so am wondering whether me and my friend should just go to Tijuana for a day trip, or if it would be okay to have a wild party night there?
Reply to this I can't imagine its a good idea for two young women to hit Tijuana on their own at night. I'd re consider that
Reply to this have fun and don't follow anyone off the beaten track, no matter how innocent they may seem
Reply to this I would have to say if you're experienced travelers you should be fine to hit the bars at night in TJ. Just use the same precautions you would use in any unknown city, especially if you don't speak Spanish. I used to go down there with friends at 18. Just a warning that TJ during the day is not a really great travel experience, just lots of kind of tacky stores.
Reply to this Like anywhere you have to watch your surroundings. Days are easier than nights. Nights are more fun though! LOL
If you drive then get auto insurance. Street lights and signs are only suggestions in Mexico!
Reply to this Hi Emma,
Tijuana has had lots of problems lately - many of the Mexican border towns are having major problems with drug cartels, or so I've been reading. I would highly recommend staying in San Diego - I bet you'd have a lot more fun! Good Luck!
Reply to this TJ Baby <- from six years ago... has it changed? - I know I have...
I spent my first night in Mexico in Tijuana - I had fun - but it is/was dodgy - very dodgy. I was offered so many illegal substances and experiences - I took none of them - except a pair of fake sunnies.
I would be very wary of going for a drunken night out again - now older and more experienced I only let my guard down when in places that I know are more or less safe - and where I have people I trust around. Not in unknown cities with bad reputations.
But if you do go for a night out - you won't be the only ones - let yourselves know what you're getting in for - get a room in a reputable hotel with a late checkout - leave your passports etc in the safe - don't get so drunk that your judgement goes missing - and look out for each other - look after your drinks - don't accept from strangers - and stay in the main bars in the center of things - don't get lured away into some of the even more seedy places just a few blocks away.
Tijuana is not a place I will be going back to in a hurry - but it was an experience!
Reply to this Oh ya...it is true about some people getting drugged up too..i know someone who went there and they put something in his drink then beat him and took everything he had in his pockets.
