I have and found the whole thing while a little scary very interesting in retrospect - analysing peoples behaviour while sinking. I sailed from Perth around Aus and the south pacific, through indonesia to thailand about 16 years ago and coming home to Western Australia we struck a cyclone and after a full knockdown lost our electronics and comms so were relying on the stars and luck for most of the trip home. Just as we could see the lights of towns leading to Perth we struck a reef in big seas and hugged the coast after setting off the epirb thinking running aground or having to swim for it when the boat went down would be our best option.

We sunk 60m from the lead in channel of a yacht club and had a intense 250m swim through big seas and staggered onto shore just as search and rescue turned up. What I found very intriguiing was behaviour of individuals while sinking. Our winchman at the time was a very large bodybuilder fitness freak kind of guy who became absolutely hysterically and actually endangered everyone even more by grabbing onto everyone else before eventually having to be shaken until he got it together enough to put on a life jacket and shoved overboard just as the boat went under.

I had a little scary time last July on Easter Island. Fully geared, rental gear! Had a full 3mm wetsuit plus a 3mm shorty on top of it...and few kg on my belt. Jump in the water...and my BCD Inflator ended up being stuck...result, I could pump water in my BCD, still I was sinking and air was escaping fast...The good news is that I simply did not panic...just shout...guys, got a problem here, I'm sinking...while kicking my fins properly. Was not yet an emergency issue to let my weighbelt go (which would have solve the issue, but a lost belt is never great). My buddy came to help, and here I was safe and ready to dive, sadly lost few bars in the process.

Did end up with a shorter dive, but the dive school was pretty impressive. They admit that the rental equipment had a "small" issue, and told me to come again for the next dive free of charge. Was nice of them, a single dive in Easter Island is a crazy 60usd! Reply to this
