Will you or have you taken a gap year?

Would you spend your gap year, helping out for free, in your home community? Will the scheme by Reform Scotland fly in your opinion, or will gap year students want to travel above everything?

Reform Scotland said that hundreds of students sign up for Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) each year.

However, they claim that many more would be interested in volunteering if they did not have to go abroad.

Mell, I agree with the article. I think there would be a large group who would do volunteer work in their home country if it was a project of interest for them.

I think the same number of people would volunteer for overseas projects.

I personally believe that they would be targeting two different groups of people. There are people who do not have the curiosity to travel to foreign lands but would be willing to do some interesting volunteer work closer to home. Reply to this

just wondering,

is this thread only about the article or also about gap years in general? I started to write about my gap year here in the reply box and realized it was a huge, long story that most people may rather not read, but if this is the right thread and someone would like me to post it, I will Reply to this

Both. It is mostly about if those taking a Gap year would do it if they didnt get to travel with it. ie Would they still take the Gap year, if they were to spend it volunteering for a charity in their own home town.

my internet freaked out.

No problem! I have done it lots of times too. It happens if you hit 'Submit' button more than once when making a post. Sometimes when the system is slow people do it, to make it go faster, but what happens is it makes a duplicate post for each time the 'Submit' button is hit. Reply to this

I want to say that it is not so that the person who has no so craze for travelling foreign countries can not be volunteer. If a parson really willing to be volunteer then can be and it is not necessary to have a craze to travel different places. Reply to this

We have done a gap year in the past and going to be doing one starting this September.. This time coming around we are going to be volunteering 6 months and backpack 6 months in Africa and South America volunteering in orphanages. I am not to sure if we would do it in our home countries (Australia and Sweden) as the care is provided already although maybe conservation of the environment would be of interest to us. Where aid and help is needed such as the places we are going to could use our help a little more. Reply to this

We would love to do volunteer nursing in the United States because there are areas that need our help. The US has a web of nursing laws that would require us to get licensed in that state. Not to say that we won't day but it is easier to volunteer in third world countries. Reply to this
