British citizen working in America

I want to get a 60 day Greyhound discovery pass. I want to travel North America but I also want to make some dollars while I'm travelling. Feasible or not?

If you're under 30 you can apply for a 2 year working visa in Canada, if you're a full-time student (and going on a hiatus of your studies for traveling) you can apply for some sort of temporary work visa in the US. Of course you can always try working cash-in-hand jobs without proper work papers, but the risk is totally yours to take. Reply to this

Lol, of course you can make money without papers in North America. Anyone who has ever been to San Diego or Los Angeles can tell you that :D

Suggestions:

1. Telemarketing - you can easily find a job without papers doing telemarketing. Not exactly the funniest job, but it's money.
2. Construction sites - Always looking for people to be "laborers". Cleaning, taking out trash and any other mule type work.
3. Local dive bars - bar backing
4. Local mom and pop style restaurants - washing dishes and such.
5. Cleaning companies - they do corporate cleaning at night. A lot of illegal immigrants do this.
6. Find different restaurants that are British themed and offer up local newspapers and such a review from the "proper perspective" about the location.
7. Americans love the British accent. Think of different ways to take advantage of it.
8. Offer up being a tour guide in Britain to Americans planning on visiting there. Ask for a 25% non-refundable retainer to prove they are committed.
9. Advertise on craigslist dot com different services you could do.

Tips:

Avoid big names and chains because you have to papers to be able to work at those companies. Instead look for small local places.

Tell people your situation, "Hey I'm travelling for a couple of months and I really could use some extra cash". A lot of times people will be able to help you out.

If things are getting tough grab a piece of cardboard and a sharpie marker "Traveling broke and hungry". Stand outside Wal-mart and gas stations. We picked up a few hitchhikers on one of our trips that gave us this useful tip. I watched in utter disbelief the money they made doing it.

Just remember that money is made by providing value and that value could be anything. Making someone laugh, seems simple, Robin Williams became a multi-millionaire by doing it.

Hope that helps. Reply to this
