Hi! I'm not traveling right now, but this information is in the front page in the international section of the newpapers here in Brazil. The government of Peru will close Machu Picchu for 3 days and Cuzco is in emergency state for 60 days. There are people stuck in Aguas Calientes since saturday and they are afraid of lack of food. An Argentine and a tourist guide died in the Inca Trail. They say that it's the worst storm in the last 15 years there. Reply to this

From miles away this morning, high atop the famous Inca Indian site, Machu Picchu, tourists gazed in shock at a river that roared below them. From that vantage point, high in the mountains, the swollen, brown river was visibly overflowing its banks, and flooding homes and farms.

Hi there,
I'm in Cusco at the minute, BBC has a decent report as do CNN, People have been evacuated out of Aguas Calientes, the kids and elderly first, I think the situation might be different today, food has arrived in this village via helicopter, not sure of peoples sleeping arrangements though it is believed 1500-2000 are stranded, I also heard that for the able bodied, some are just walking out, bridges have collapsed, tours have been cancelled with some operators refusing refunds which as you can imagine is causing some upsets, Right now it is raining although we got some respite for a few hours today, I would not advise anyone to come this way until more info is available and the weather stabilizes, According to local news a lot of homes are destroyed outside the city and at least 2 people are dead. The weather forecast says that more rain is on the way, Having said all this although its miserably wet here in the city I think we are ok, I think it might be the poor folks outside the city who are suffering the most, The pictures on local tv are pretty scary, Some reports say many roads are impassable with a current total of 40 mudslides in this area, we are indeed in a state of emergency, lets hope the worst is over Reply to this

I dont like to hear this news. The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu is the best thing I did while traveling. Cusco is a beautiful city too. I hope it's over quickly.

Reading that report was like reading a blog! I loved the way she called the town that is called Agus Calientes, Hot Springs. I didn't know you could change a towns name to its direct translated meaning.

Would be like me calling Dublin 'Black Pool' !

This would be on the same level of tasteful, as when the European Union was considering calling the new currency the 'Euro Dollar'. 😉 Reply to this

I am so sad to know this is happening now. But I think that one of the first things you should do when planning a trip is to ask when is it advisable to go and when NOT. January is not a time to go to the Andean countries. Reply to this

BBC Report - Mass Evacuation of Tourists

It doesn't look good for anyone planning to be in or around Cusco for the next few weeks at least. Lots of infrastructure is down.

I think only 1 tourist died and 1 guide - out of a total of 5 fatalities.

Hotel prices in Cusco are reportedly very high and cash machines are out.

Thousands of local people have lost homes, farmland - as tourists we're able to get out (eventually) of most of these situations. Reply to this

Guys just wanna let you know we have had 2 days of beautiful sunshine, I hiked all day today and it was fluffy white clouds all day, A lot of local folks are affected by this, there are problems with hiking into Machu Pichu but the main roads from Lima, Ariquipe, ect are open, the goverment reacted quickly but as always it's the poor affected, if you had planned to come here, please come, these people need the tourist monetary input at the moment, Cash machines are working and it would seem to me all services are normal with exception of the route to Aguas Caliente where the worst of the devastation occurred, Travelers are here and we have found nothing lacking for us tourists, Come the locals need your dollars and Euros ect Cheers Reply to this

The train line to Puno is out and will be for a while the Puno festival is starting next weekend so this may affect some peoples plans, Ali the opposite is true, In Cusco city the lunch prices and hostal prices have gone down because there is a massive drop in tourists in just a week, It is true that thousands of local families are homeless, The weather remains beautiful with sunny skies.
