Can persons with some mobility issues enter the site at Calakmul?

Hey All,

I'm planning a trip through the Yucatan region with visits to a number of archaeological sites. We are traveling with someone who has a little trouble getting around. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into the site at Calakmul. I understand there's a trail. Any idea how long it is? Or if it's more or less level?
Thanks!

Hello John,

I was in Calakmul about three years ago and the site was quite spread out and, if my memory serves me right, the main attractions were a long way from the parking area, but the paths were in really good shape and, more or less, level. If it is just a question of finding a few places to sit down along the way then I would recommend taking a portable seat of some sort. Also, If you concentrate on the main portions of the site then it may be doable. Just being in the forest there is enough of a reason to go - There was a lot of life. The other Rio Bec sites in the area were impressive as well and many of them were very accessible. My information is a bit dated, but I doubt much has changed - Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Hi John,

We just got back from the Yucantan last week and visited 9 ruins on our tour of the Yucatan. Calakmul is quite excessible, they do have a few wheel chair ramps as well as wide pathways a few benches and if you stick to the main routes, you shouldn't have any troubles. Tulum was quite excesible, as well as Uxmal. If you have anymore questions or would like more details, please let me know!

Also, I wouldn't recommend visiting any of the ruins if it is raining or wet outside though, as there is quite a bit of moss and things could get quite slick. Reply to this
