Hey Everyone,
I am looking to go on a retreat with my gf from the US. I want a non touristy spot in Mexico where we can get a nice reasonably priced hotel. I love the mountains or the beach. A friend from mexico suggested aguascalientes but i can only find info on the city and not surrounding areas. I would love a place on the water where you can get a nice place away from a big city and eat good mexican food and relax. Let me know if you are aware of such an "ideal" place.
Reply to this Hello Blgerber 😊
When I was in Mexico I enjoyed San Cristobal de las Casas. It is in the mountains and not so many tourists there. You can also easily get to the surrounding Indian villages on the local vans that take the Indians to and from the market in San Cristobal.

Reply to this If you are looking for Cancun beaches but not cancun tourists...check out Tulum. They've also got some killer ruins right on the water. Plus you can sip Coronas on the beach for $15 pesos. Not a bad deal.
Puerto Escondido is also an amazing place. So is Cuernavaca. Its dubbed Primavera eterna (Eternal spring) But there is no beach in Cuernavaca.
Reply to this I stayed right at the bottom end of the riviera maya (hotel was grand bahia principe), gorgeous beaches, can get out of the way of most people and its right near tulum and the jungle areas....cheap for most things as well.....and not So isolated you feel like you dont belong....
Reply to this You can go to Playa del Carmen, its has great sandy beaches. I am sure you can find a lonley spot there to be with your gf.
But if you want to know a lovely and magical town you can go to San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato state.
Reply to this Try San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato state or Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosi state.
Reply to this Hey!!! you should try Puerto Vallarta!!! There are mountains, jungles, rivers and the Pacific Ocean!!! 2 picturesque towns nearby named Bucerias and Sayulita, these places are full of activities, nice restaurants, cheap and the best Mexican foo ever!!! Try it!!! you wont regret it!!!!
Reply to this We're going to a rural village in the mountains to visit a friend of ours and do some volunteer work. They can ALWAYS use volunteers, or if you'd just like to chill in an interesting place, here is a link to their website: greatgreens.org
Reply to this I recommend San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. It has soft sand beaches and the sea on one side and beautiful rugged mountains on the other. It's safe, clean, affordable and fun. For more info, check out

Reply to this Hello!!
I am Mike from Toronto, glad I found this forum and hoping to get lots of ideas for upcoming adventures!!.
Me and my girlfriend are planning a trip to Mexico next winter and cant find where to go, I have been to Mexico in 2 occasions but it wasnt what I had in mind, first time I went to Puerto Escondido and the second time to Playa del Carmen. In both occasions I was told that those where beautiful and not very developed places, they are beautiful but the amount of tourism and americanized attractions was very annoying, even Tulum, which was a bit closer to what I wanted, but still not quite. We want to get a real feel of Mexico, we want to find a few small villages on the beach where we can rent small cabanas and live like the local people, no resorts, no fine restaurants and with just a few tourists, hopefully backpackers like ourselves.
Any ideas you can give me will be much appreciated!!
Thanks!
Reply to this San Blas looks good! will do some research on it, San Carlos seems to be quite developed...
Reply to this Hi bigerber,
Another suggestion and a place i love for its lack of touristy attractions is zipolite beach on the coast of Oaxaca all the comforts fresh fish, beach, mexican food , a little nightlife, little, day trips to mazunte, puerto angel or puerto escondido for surfing
Or get way out there at Chacahua a lagoon 60 miles north west of purto escondido where you arrive by boat and rent a cabana on the beach go to google maps and trace the road north of puerto escondico to rio grande head towards the water from there to lagoon Pastoria. from there take a shard launch to the chacahu (sp? ) lagoon and beach

Reply to this The place that comes to mind...and it may be too late, as I see your question was back in January...would be the section of the southern tip of the Yucatan called the Costa Maya. It is 5 hours south of Cancun..but only about 50 miles north of Belize.
There is a cruise ship dock in the little town of Mahahual, but you can work around that. About 25 miles north of this town is a little place on the beach called Mayan Beach Garden. Check out the web site....6 cabanas right on the beach. You can walk for miles and not see another single soul. The snorkeling is unbelievable as the MesoAmerican Barrier Reef is just offshore. You can always head down into town for a little activity....and I mean "a little". The town is very, very small...sort to what Tulum used to be.
Check it out....
Reply to this My husband and I love the colonial highland cities of San Miguel de Allende (although really touristy), Guanajuato, Morelia and Oaxaca. We plan on returning to Oaxaca in October to stay for a month. It's a relaxing city that is not overpopulated with tourists, is easy to walk and has a lot going on. The outlying towns are well worth a visit - we use the local buses and enjoy living like we belong there. If you go, a visit to the ancient Zapotec ruins at Monte Alban is a must.
Reply to this Oaxaca is getting ready for the Day of the Dead celebration The city is beautiful and not touristy although at ceartain times lots of visitors arrive
The day of the dead action starts the last week in october.
The cemetery visits start the last night of october and continue until the night of the second of November. Great photos and great experience.
check the web for photos and info oaxaca Day of the Dead, Oaxaca sand paintings day of the dead, Oaxaca Day of the dead schedule, etc.

Reply to this I'm leaving for Puerto Vallarta in a week and I'll be there for the Day of the Dead. I hope to take nice pictures without being intrusive. I'll be staying in Old Puerto Vallarta where there are nice, clean and economical hotels. After PV, I'll be heading on to Melaque, near Barra de Navidad. About a 3-hour bus ride! It is supposed to be really quiet and is a weekend destination for the Mexicans themselves. I am planning on renting a hotel (bungalow) with a kitchenette and live a simple life by the beach for a few weeks. Can't wait! It'll be my second visit in Mexico. The first time was in 2008, at Playa del Carmen. Nice place but a lot of tourists.
Reply to this Xcalak, the southernmost village on the Mexian Caribbean coast.
Reply to this Baja for sure! Try the east cape of Baja for a kicked back vacation and near perfect weather.
This is a good web site for Baja info - <snip>
