HAPPY CHRISTMAS everybody!!!!
I hope your all having a brilliant holiday, I really wish I could be at home today. Christmas in Bolivia just isn't the same..but more about Bolivia later!
I have (as predicted) been completely rubbish with my Blogs lately and I thought Christmas Eve might be the perfect time to try and fill in some of the blanks and get up to date.
Since I spoke to you all last I have travelled through, enjoyed and definitely got the T shirt for the brilliant Country of PERU!
One of the reasons I haven't been doing much blogging of late is mostly due to the fact that Peru is absolutely, bloody crazy and I have been constantly on the go for the past month and a bit.
It didn´t look very promising at the beginning as getting off the Galapagos, post Cruise, was an absolutely nightmare. To cut a very long story short I managed to miss my flight off the islands which I arrived 4 hours early for!!!! I'm not quite sure how it happens to me but it does... I must confess that I was not very nice to the lady behind the counter at
the airport, but they had nothing to indicate when you should check in or arrive for your flight etc and she had seen me sitting there like a moron for 2 hours pre check in. Either way I manage to secure a free flight for the next morning. I then made sure my friend Paul and myself arrived 3 hours earlier for our flight to Lima the next day, only for the flight to be delayed for 7 hours....that was a fun day at the airport!
During out first breakfast in Lima we met a really nice couple from Belfast and almost straight away the four of us sat down together and booked a trip for the next week, leaving the following morning. This meant we only had the one afternoon in Lima, but I wasn´t too bothered. Lima is very impressive but pretty much like any other huge city in the world....Lots of people, lots of noise and LOADS of crazy drivers.
Our trip started with a 7 hour bus Journey down to the City of Nazca. I´m not sure if I've mentioned this before but its really funny how your perception of time changes when travelling.
In this case I remember thinking that a 3 and a half hour bus Journey to Leeds was a really long trip and I had to make sure I had the whole weekend there to justify the journey, but now if the trip is less than 4 hours it doesn´t even register as a long journey , you could go in the morning and come back in the evening!
Any hoo, we were booked onto a flight over the famous Nazca Lines. For those of you who don't know about the lines (I´d never heard of them either!) the Nazcan people made the lines about 2000 years ago as offerings to their Gods. It is believed they created the huge images of animals in the earth and huge Trapezoidal shapes to process along in the hope that the Gods would send them 1)Water and 2) the powers of the animals considered sacred, neither of which worked as its believed the civilisation was wiped out by drought! Personnally I can´t se why, if they were willing to walk for days around the lines , they couldn´t walk in a straight line and find some water, but that's just me!!
We had our own private jet for 4 people which was an experience in its self and the trip would have been fantastic if I wasn't having my first experience with "Travellers Stomach"´. I can´t really complain because I´ve been fine for the whole of my trip so far (touch wood) but this day was really bad...I spent the whole plane Journey (1 hour 15mins)
1) desperately waiting for the plane to land so that I could run to the loo and praying I could hang on!
2) Sweating like crazy due to the size of the plane and lack of any air at all , never mind air conditioning.
3) Deafened by the pilot next to me shouting "on your right ....a monkey ....ok? on your right ....a monkey ....ok? on your right ....a monkey ....ok? on your right ....a monkey ....ok?" about a million times!...YES I SEE THE FLIPPIN MONKEY!!!!
Apart from the crippling pains in my stomach, the nightmare of not having a bathroom close to hand and my sweat drenched clothes, it was a really good experience.
We only had a brief stop in Nazca (thank Goodness) and we were back on the bus
for an 8 hour trip to Arequipa! Another Journey of fun which I could share with my new best friend "Imodium!"
When we arrived in Arequipa, I admit I was really impressed from what I could see (through water filled eyes caused by crippling stomach pains..Ill get over it now, just don't eat street food in Peru!) the city was beautiful. Much Smaller than Lima and the buildings were very grand. Not only was it beautiful but it was so sunny. I ended up spending a week in Arequipa doing some serious shopping (got some lovely jeans!). We visited Colca Canyon on a two day trip which was awesome and famous for its "Flight of the Condor". We did get to see some Condors flying over the canyon and they really are huge. Sadly a bit to quick to Photograph, but they were really impressive against the canyon backdrop.
I cant really remember what I got up to in Arequipa I just know I really enjoyed it... so it probably involved a few cocktails. It was definitely a week for chilling out before I headed on to the Jungle once again!!!!
