Since I wrote to ye last I’ve changed continents and bought a cool new camera. So from here out you know all the great pictures are definitely mine. It’s pretty and pink. Anyways here’s what the 3 of us have been up to. On our last full day in Sticky Panama we went out to Milaflores to see the Panama Canal. It was great really interesting. We were looking at one of the locks which is used to raise the boat from the level of the sea to the level of the artificial lake. We saw 2 boats going through. One paying $170000 and the other empty one paying $100000. The canal generates $7million per day for Panama. There in the process of building new locks so bigger boats can fit through. Going through the canal saves the boats 2 weeks they would have to spend going round south America. We bused it to and from here. There was a bit of confusion and a some locals seemed worried for our safety and were advising us to get taxis. We got on grand. It was still daylight like. Still makes you wonder..
Early on the morning of the 22nd we flew
to Lima Peru with Copa Air. It was in Duty Free that I bought my new shiny camera. It was a good flight with free food and rum and brilliant views over the Andes. There was an English man and á latino lady sitting behind us on the plane. The exchanged live stories in the 3 hour flight. I mean every intimate detail of their existence. Crazy stuff.
We stayed in a really nice hotel in Lima, we got upgraded to a en-suite with a tv, I think it was cause they were very quiet. And we were the only backpackers staying in the backpacker hostel. Miss Peru was on in Lima on our first night. There was lots of fireworks going on around the city.
The food in Lima is good and bad. They’re absolutely mad for fried chicken an big greasy chips. Had that 2 nights in a row, Yucky. They do compensate for this however on their national snack. The amazing churro. it’s a long donut type thing filled with various types of goodness, So as you can gather we had a very healthy time of it food wise in Lima. Other than eating we went to
see the cathedral on Sunday morning while mass was on. It was the most spectacular mass I was ever at. A full orchestra accompanying the choir and about 20 priests and the bishop type person all singing mass. After mass there was a big procession around the square. Lots of local groups dressed up and dancing. On the final float there was a statue of Jesus with lots and lots of flowers. This was carried by lots of serious looking not so young men up to the guards of the presidential palace. After the exhaustion of this we went to the Estadio del futbol pub and had a pint of extremely overpriced beer. In very cool cups tho see pictures. Lots of very good waxworks of famous footballers rico had a great time mixing up with the rich and famous.
On our last night in Lima we headed to the Magical water fountains. These are in the Guinness book of records for the highest fountains in a public park. We saw a water show which was better than fireworks and got soaked in the random fountain. Well Yvonne and Rico got soaked Gary playing it safe got away bone dry.
Next sop Nazca with was really nice and sunny without the humidity of Panama. I had developed a cold since my playing in the water fountains.. We stayed in a nice family fun hostel here babies everywhere. It was really quiet here too. Even tho this is meant to be high season south America. We found out its now $60 for a 30 minute flight over the lines. Apparently a few months ago a plane crashed and the passengers died so now they have to abide by safety regulations so it’s gotten more expensive. Instead we choose to go to the mirador which is a lookout tower for the lizard, hands and tree geoglyphs near the road. We saw a bit but it would defiantly had been much better if we’d gone up in the plane. A local lad told us we could see more if we walked up a hill at the end of the road so off we went with our half bottle of water. When we got there we could see noting. There was a place where half a telepscop used to be, so I supposed maybe that helped you see the lines in times gone
by. We hitched a lift from a bus back to Nazca. On this bus I was sititng beside a lady who asked if I got my Italian bracelet in Nazca. I said no but she seemed to insist that I did. Since that I’ve noticed several people around wearing them. Yesterday we went to a hotel with a pool for the day while waiting for our overnight bus. It was nice and relaxing, the sun isn’t really strong enough to tan but it was very nice to lie in all the same.
After checking out the overnight buses we decided to take a gamble and go for Transporte Wari bus company. There was very little information available on the net about them. The lad in the hotel said that this was a bus that the locals use and the other bus Cruz del Sur would be more comfortable/safer. We’d gone with Cruz from Lima to Nazca and we didn’t find then overly comfortable and the security seemed to be overkill. I’m now sitting on the Transporte Wari bus and its great. Good decision. Landing in Cuzco soon. I’m very excited. x
