Ok, so Day 3 in Perú!
Today we began our observations in the high school. The school is called Mercedes Cabello, and it is an all-girls public high school. I sat in on three classes: Social Studies, Physics, and English. The students stay in the same rooms and the teachers come to them. (love that roving thing!) So I was with the same class for all three periods. The girls were all seniors, and ranged in age from 16-17. They were all very curious about life in the United States, and we talked about music, food, and other customs. Everyone wanted our email addresses, so I am anticipating having many new email-pals. (amigas del correo electrónico)
We will be in that particular school for two more days- Wednesday and Thursday. It was interesting seeeing the differences between schools here in South America and those back home. Even though it is a public school, the students wear uniforms. The classroom climate is very laid-back for the most part; students rarely raise their hands; there is a lot of noise from outside the rooms; the doors to the classrooms lock when they are closed; there are bells but classes
tend to begin when the teacher arrives which is sometimes after the bell rings. Looking forward to seeing more schools while I am here. The school is open design- not in an enclosed building, and since it is winter in Perú it was very cold in the rooms. Oh, and since I was wearing a long skirt today and white sneakers for the 30 minute walk to the school, not only was I freezing but I got filthy walking the streets this morning! My white shoes are now black, along with my socks and ankles....ewwwwww
I am hoping that all of the walking we are doing will help me burn the calories I am intaking from the food here! Everything is soooo good, but unfortunately they serve a lot of potatoes and rice. Great for a carb-a-holic such as myself. Lunch was in a Chinese restaurant- BUFFET!! Did I mention how good the food is here? Yes, I am being very careful not to drink any water if not from a bottle, no ice, and no fresh vegetables or fruit. It is so tough to remember not to use the water from the faucet for brushing my teeth! Might
have to put a note up to remind me.
My group seems to know me pretty well already in just three days of being together. They have already established that I talk a lot, shop a lot, intake a lot of sugar, and tend to run a bit late. Not bad for so early in the trip huh? I am sure most of you might tend to disagree with these findings... oh wait, nevermind. Pretty true I guess if you know me at all, which most of you probably do. I know you are reading this and nodding your heads and smiling, thinking, "Yep! Sounds like Alyssa!"
We went back to Miraflores this afternoon to do some, uh, sightseeing? Nah, went shopping a little. They have the greatest stuff here!! And its all soooo reasonably priced! (Spoken like a true shop-a-holic) Actually, my roommate Natalie and I are quite the pair. We both love to shop, always run late, have no sense of direction, spend too much time on the internet, and love Chris Daughtry. Couldn't be better! Nah, she is great. I really like her a lot. We get along famously. (that might be the first time
I have ever used famously not referring to Hollywood..)
On our return to the hotel, we had a presentation on the guinea pig production. For those of you who do not know, guinea pig or "cuy" is a HUGE delicacy and popular dish in Perú. Still debating whether to try it. I would like to be able to say that I at least tasted it. Don't worry, if I do, you will all see the pictures!
Dinner was at "Estadio," a local restaurant with a soccer theme, so I was happy!! I drank a Piña Colada out of a ceramic soccer ball mug, watched Fiore drink beer out of a litre glass, snacked on salted toasted corn kernels, and enjoyed my meal of chicken, rice, french fries, and platanos. Yes, low fat, low calories, and low carbs for me! Soooo good though...
Anyway, off to bed. That was the plan about an hour ago but I tend to lose track of time when I am on the computer. Come on, ALL of you know what I am talking about! Besides, I am sure you are all looking forward to reading my latest entry!
Hasta pronto!
Alyssa
