Machu Picchu housed about 1000 inhabitants and has temples, terraces, houses and store rooms. Here, one of the houses was restored to show how the roof was constructed. They used a stiff alpine grass that grows higher in the mountains to thatch the roofs.

After lunch, we decided we hadn´t got quite enough of hiking, so we climbed Wayna Picchu, the steep peak over looking the ruins. It was a about a 1000ft climb of steep steps carved in to the mountain. The only safety measure was signing your name in a book before you climb up. not sure exactly what we were signing. Ah, South America.
