It was one of the most wonderful trips I have taken so far, the most difficult hike, part of it because I was not in a very good shape. But otherwise also a very fun trip. If I get a chance, I would definately do this again, but its a short life and that is not going to happen.
But I am not going to write a lot here. I wrote my diary while on the trip, something new I tried. And memories are fading now, names are slipping. So here are some anecdotes.
The hostel where we stayed in Cusco : Samay Wasi
http://www.samaywasiperu.com/ I picked this hotel because the name was very Indian, time resident or something like that. The hostel was ok, no complains, nothing special also. Though the bed was really small, smaller than a full size American bed, little difficult to share. The place is old, but clean and well maintained. There was hot water. Staff was helpful in getting us taxi, breakfast, hot water etc. They also picked us up from the airport and had internet which they let us use for free I think. It is little off the main
square, but still walkable from everywhere. Being on a hill, view from their terrace was nice, especially with early morning breakfast.
The tour company we went with: Andean Life.
http://www.andeanlife.com/ I picked this at random, they seemed nice, and now I would highly highly recommend them. We had great experience with them. Their whole staff of porters was very polite and helpful all through the trek. The cook who went with us Ceasar is simply the best!! If you meet him, say my hi and that I miss his cooking. Our tour guide was Romilo. He was also nice, knew a lot about the area.
Vegetarian food in Cusco:
Vegetarian food in cusco is no problem at all. Especially in the touristy part where we were staying. The best they have are the soups, they are just amazing. Not like the creamy fatty immitations of soups here, but real soups made out of real vegetables and what not. That was the best thing I had there. Almost all restaurant also server other vegetarian stuff, with rice, lots of Pizza. And fear not, there are also a couple of hare-rama-hare-krishna restaurants there. They of course server
purely vegetarian food. We tried out one, it was good, food was different immitation of Indian, but it was edible. Fruits were good, real fruits. So my fellow vegetarians, fear not, have lot of fun in Cusco.
I do not remember names of places now. But we mostly went to small restaurants on the side streets. They were good, nice and friendly, away from big crowded squares, and you could see that they were simply parts of people's houses, wierd entrances.
You are from the country of ShahRukh Khan!!
No I did not make this up, this is what one very nice restaurant owner said to us. ShahRukh Khan is big in Peru. A bunch of girls at a store were watching DDLJ and other songs and actually singing along without knowing what a single word meant. I tried to describe a little, but you know the songs. They made me write "I love you" in Hindi on a paper and learnt how to say it!
