Edit Blog Post
Hey folks! Ive eventually managed to get a few photos on the computer so i´ll try and include them in this blog...
Wow, this week has just passed sooo quickly, last week was MEGA slow but this week has just gone whoosh! It seems like there´s getting less and less news as i get used to living here, but dont worry im sure i can manage my usual essay lol! What i still cant get used to is getting stared at constantly, no matter what you´re doing, what you´re wearing, where you are or who you´re with, it´s so weird!! Don´t think im ever gonna get used to being the freak in town, dont know how u do it fiona!!! :P the funniest thing happened the other day, i was taking the long way home so was walking along a busy road (peoples heads sticking out the car to stare at me lol) when a man on his bike with a baby on his back passed me, well he was staring at me so intently and for so long that he crashed straight into a tree and fell off!! ahaha i was hysterics couldn´t help myself!!!
Talking about funny
my bed teehee!
For my mum lol! stories, one day this week my family started to ask me all about scotland, so I showed them all the photos I´ve got with me, including the ones of my family and friends too. Well this lead to the funniest conversation I think I´ve ever had, wish I could remember some of the quotes they came out with!! It´s just the way they think about scotland is sooo funny, they couldn´t understand why I was in hysterics! They don´t know where it is either...someone mentioned the north pole...?! And they´ve all heard of the Loch Ness Monster funnily enough, well that´s as far as it goes, cos they ended up all shouting at each other at the top of their voices as to the true story of it...they mentioned elephants and circuses a lot?!?! Spent so long trying to teach them to say Loch in a true scottish way!!! I feel so scottish over here, no english speaking paraguayans understand me (well there´s not exactly a lot of them :P) and the five of us volunteers are all from different places with really different accents, they take the piss out of me cos apparently I say ´folk´and ´wifey´constantly?? Dunno what
else to call the mum in my family she´s just my wifey!!! Anyways, my family were shocked, and i mean really shocked, that it snows! lol! THEN my wifey started on what noises all our animals make (!), well she just thought it was the funniest thing
ever that our dogs go ´woof´ ...dont ask!! apparently they wow here?! and chickens go caa! Then they realised that dixie, their dog (who´s a yorkshire terrier) must be english and therefore must be able to speak english better than them...well THAT was the second funniest thing ever...
A word of warning, mum PLEASE dont read the next paragraph, honestly it´s for your own good...
OMG, the scariest thing ever happened on thursday night to one of my friends, Danielle. She lives just outside of Asuncion (the capital) so she usually gets picked up, but on thursday Fanny told her she had to take a taxi by herself for the first time. (oh we were told taxis were very safe here as long as you phone for one or take one from a rank, which she did) Well the driver decided to get himself lost, stopped at 5 different ranks to
Some of my class at Alegria
l-r
Pauola, Sylvia (the teacher), Jasmine, Juanho, the helper, Juan Jose, Agostina, me, Jose! Missing Mara & Jose Carlos ask where to go, in the process stopping to chat and drink terrere (will explain later) for 5mins each time, and change his tyre with Danielle in the car, and all with the meter running of course. So the journey that usually takes 20mins took an hour. And so he tried to charge her 8 pounds for the journey (an absolute fortune for a taxi over here) so obviously she said no, and said she´d give him 5 pound instead. Well what did he do then but get angry and start shouting at her in spanish and whip out a pen knife???? She just threw him a note worth 10 pound and ran, so thankfully she didn´t get hurt. Can´t believe something like that´s happened so soon, although everyone I´ve spoken to since says that never happens here, especially since she took one from a taxi rank, so I guess she was just unlucky. We all agree that it´s a shame it´s happened now while we´re still taking in our first impressions of Paraguay.
She´s not having much luck actually lol cos she managed to get herself stranded in god knows where the next day, but guess who came
to the rescue hehe! I had a random male keep phoning me and shouting in spanish, most of which was impossible to understand, so dunno how i managed to get not one, but two people going to pick her up lol!! Felt so sorry for her though, she eventually got home at 9 (and we finish work at 4.... :S)
This weekends been quite good, yesterday we went to the shopping centre to meet hugh and emily (other volunteers) who live outside of the city so we hadn´t seen them since last week. Not really shopping just buying random stuff (jewellry mum haha!!) but it was good to see them again. Then last night we went out for the first time, woo!! Started off at the Britannia pub cos so many people had told us about it, it serves what they think is british food, plays what they think is british music and has union jacks everywhere, that´s about it lol!! omg, u should see the size of the gin and tonics i was getting, the glass was literally 3/4 full before i put any tonic in it!!! one can of tonic did me more than 4 drinks!! and
all for 90p lol. oooh the cocktails are good there too, dont know if u get malibu sunrise in britain but its soooo yummy! it´s guillermo´s birthday today so he was there celebrating too. Then we went to a club called Africa, apparently all the clubs here are really sexist and it costs twice as much for a male to get in, i like that idea haha!! 50p entry for us 😊 It was good to be back in the party atmosphere lol, didnt get to do as much dancing as id like though hehe! club looked good enough to me, but then after, some guys i was speaking to outside said that this place was rubbish and there´s much better places, so we´ll see what next weekend brings eh!
Really want to go and visit the others in Villa Hayes, i get the impression that it´s much more basic out there, like only getting water at certain times and the only roads being dirt tracks, would be interesting to see!
That´s me almost finished, at last lol, but one more thing - to all you folk that thought and still think i´m in Peru??? Well guess what
the main street that i walk along every day to work is called?!? PERU!!! teehee! so i did make it there lol!
Good luck to everyone that´s starting uni either tomorrow or next week, thinking of you! Let me know how it goes. And to everyone that´s moving away, laura it´s not gonna be the same when i come back and ur not there sweetie!
Miss you guys so much, all my lurve,
Lisa xXxXx
