From Colombia I was on a mad dash for Quito. This meant that there were a couple of things missed and a couple of good sites and stops bypassed, but I had my mission. I know not why nor ever discovered, but there is a short ‘low season’ in the Galapagos from May through mid-June and I wanted to catch some of the lower fares. Having dallied in Venezuela too long, meant by the time I had bren to Bogota and the fabulous Zone Cafetera, I was beginning to be pushed for time. So, off to Quito. It took me about 2 days to check out the different tours available to the Galapagos, book the tour and the flights. It really wasn’t difficult, but this may have been because it was off season. The whole thing ... read more

In the “you learn something new every day” category, I now know that Vilcabamba’s roosters—like its dogs—howl at full moons. And tonight, amigos, there’s a full moon. Although Jack and I are accustomed to waking up in the morning to a cacophony of roosters and dogs—with an occasional burro filling in the bass line—this non-stop all-nighter is a revelation. The roosters’ fingernails-on-chalkboard voices collect and mix and swirl up the mountainside darkly to our little casita, reminding one of the souls in Dante's lowest circle screaming for release, or one of those horrid 1950s movies set in an insane asylum. It’s 2 a.m. and the animal kingdom is taking turns supplicating Vilcabamba’s moon god with their favorite arias. When the canines take a break, a rooster takes that’s as his cue to command center stage. Soon, ... read more

Loja was cold on Sunday! Now I understand why a Vilcabamba local, looking at the influx of cars one recent afternoon said, "Oh, those are Lojans, coming down to Vilcabamba to warm up." It didn't register at the time, and I made the mistake of wearing a sleeveless top to the city 40 kilometers up the hill instead of my black leather jacket, which would have been just about right. It is winter in Ecuador. We may forget about that in Vilcabamba, "land of eternal spring," but we got a chilly reminder in Loja. Elevation matters. Vilcabamba's combination of 5,600-feet and latitude may create the perfect climate, but going up in elevation just another 600-feet and it's time to dig out the jacket—or at least that was the case on Sunday. I'm sure Loja's equivalent of ... read more

When someone in Vilcabamba tells you to "go take a hike," they might mean it literally. The mountainsides are lined with trails where locals have trod for centuries to get to their homes and sugar cane fields. Even today, many homes are accessible only by foot and residents must carry food, water, furnishings and other supplies up... and up... and up, often with the help of a friendly burro. Looking across the valley from our casita, vertical lines snake upward and lead to homes perched on the mountainside. No wonder this is called "The Valley of Longevity!" Cardiologists know better than try to set up shop in this town with the amount of exercise these good locals get. The streets have more pedestrians, horses, and burros than cars. Locomotion, either on two or four feet, seems ... read more

There's something about Vilcabamba that attracts people on opposite ends of the spectrum—any spectrum you define —political, religous, financial, moral, etc. You'll meet some of the nicest and most evolved people anywhere here—locals, transplants, and transients—and you'll also meet characters who just want to take advantage of the innocents. As far as we can tell the highest population of scoundrels seems to be among the recent transplants (yes, many of whom are in real estate). Some say it's the vortex and the powerful sacred mountain of Mandango that draws such disparate energies and brings out the best—and the worst—in people here. Some say it's just human nature that a certain type of unscrupulous operator will smell money in a burgeoning area and come running. The "Wild West" is a term people often use when describing Vilcabamba ... read more

Vilcabamba (how can you not love a place with the rhythmical name like Vil-ca-bam-ba) continues to captivate. Some people say it's because of the negative ions. "You just feel better here," one woman told me. Other people say it draws visitors because of the "vortex." Some people just like the weather, natural beauty, and friendly locals. Whatever it is, be careful about staying too long. You might never leave. It's happened! We've signed up for Spanish classes three days a week from that marvelous Argentinian woman who lives in our little conclave. "Teaching is my passion!" she proclaims. Her father was a linguist who spoke 10 languages and worked as a translator from their Buenos Aires home, so her earliest memories are of hearing the music of many different tongues. What a gift of a childhood ... read more

... read more

Day 763 (02.05.09) We woke feeling much more able to take the onward bus to Vilcabamba after a good night's sleep we first had a walk around town in Loja (not an awful lot to see there) before jumping on the bus. The valley that the town sits in is well known in the county as the Valley of Longevity as the people who live here just dont seem to kick the bucket. As we passed through the lush tranquil rolling hills on our way there we got our first taste of why people stick around here for a bit longer. Arriving in town we stopped off for a quick lunch before getting a taxi the last couple of KM out to Izhcayluma our home for the next couple of days. Our first impression was great ... read more

Pues ... read more

Hi Everyone, We´ve decided to stay one more week at the farm and then head to Piura Peru. We thought about leaving this weekend so that we could travel with David, another American on the farm, but once we actually considered leaving we realized how much we liked the farm and wanted to spend some more time here. Two American couples from Ashville, North Carolina arrrived and have been a lot of fun to hang out with. They have also already been to Peru and have helped us plan our time there. One of the guys, Jason, is pretty crazy... he spent 30 minutes the other day in the chicken coop pretending to be a chicken. He also plays the guitar and didgeridoo (sp?) at the same time. The cow finally gave birth so we have ... read more
