Parque Abdon Calderon
This is esstially the centre of town. The park is bordered on one side by the old cathedral, and on the other side by the new cathedralAt 4 PM on Tuesday, the director of the school, Fausto, gave three of us students a bit of a walking tour around the downtown area. I met Bernard, a German expat who lives in Portland and is a tour guide for German tourists; and Jenna, who works at the Boston Aquarium and coordinates student interns. Many of her interns are Hispanic, so she is here for two weeks to improve her Spanish Skills.
We walked around the downtown area within a few blocks of the school. We saw examples of some of the early and historic buildings, I’ve put some descriptions with the photos.
We saw an outdoor market, an indoor market, a fruit market, and had a tour of the factory where they make “Panama Hats” (Rafael Paredes Sombreros). It is something of a sore point that the best Panama hats are made in Cuenca, without much recognition. I was impressed with the hats, and will return later to buy one before I go home. The hat factory had a café, and we had a hot chocolate.
We also went to the Cathedral. What an amazing and beautiful place. The symbolism in the Catholic church is

This is an historic building that dates to the mid 1800´s. Originally it was the first university in Cuenca. very large, and there were numerous shrines inside the cathedral representing different figures in the church (Jesus, Mary, and ?) with people praying at them. I’ll do a separate blog entry on the Cathedral.
After the tour, we had hot chocolate in the coffee shop at the hat factory, then I walked home. I was in my room and my host’s daughter Fernanda came and introduced herself, and put out the supper (la merienda). She works in the computer business, and is trying to get her own consulting business going. She also teaches ballet a couple of hours a day. The rest of the family was out, and returned while Fernanda and I were doing the dishes. I spent a while talking to Norma and Fernando about Ecuador and Canada, mostly in English, before going to bed. My vocabulary is still very limited.
El Cuenca Alrededor de Pueblo

French architecture
Not only is there Spanish influence in the architecture here, but French as well. Apparently one of the priests that was here in the 1800´s also was an architect, and his influence can still be seen around town. y es un guía de excursión para turistas alemanes; Y Jenna, quien trabaja en el Boston Aquarium y coordina a los internos estudiantiles. Muchos de sus internos son hispanoamericanos, así es que ella está aquí para dos semanas para mejorar a su Skills Español.
Paseamos alrededor del área del centro de la ciudad dentro de algunos bloques de la escuela. Vimos ejemplos de algunos de los edificios tempraneros e históricos, he puesto algunas descripciones con las fotos.
Vimos un mercado externo, un mercado bajo techo, un mercado de la fruta, y tuvimos una excursión de la fábrica donde hacen “ Sombreros Panamás ” (Rafael Paredes Sombreros). Es algo de un tema delicado que los mejores Sombreros Panamás están hechos en Cuenca, sin mucho reconocimiento. Quedó impresionado con los sombreros, y regresará más tarde a comprar uno antes de que voy a casa. La fábrica de sombreros tuvo un café, y tuvimos un chocolate caliente.
También fuimos a la Catedral. Qué lugar tan asombroso y tan bello. El simbolismo en la Iglesia Católica es muy grande, y hubiera numerosos altares dentro de la catedral representando figuras diferentes en la iglesia (Jesús, Mary, ¿ y?) Con personas rezando en
ellos. Haré una entrada separada del blog en la Catedral.
Después de la excursión, tuvimos chocolate caliente en la cafetería en la fábrica de sombreros, en ese entonces caminé a casa. Estaba en mi cuarto y la hija de mi anfitrión Fernanda vino y se presentó, y apagó la cena (la merienda). Ella trabaja en el negocio de la computadora, y está tratando de poner en marcha su negocio consultivo. Ella también enseña ballet un par de horas un día. El resto de familia estaba fuera, y regresó mientras Fernanda y yo lavábamos los platos. Gasté un rato hablando con Norma y Fernando acerca de Ecuador y Canadá, en su mayor parte en inglés, antes de irme a la cama. Mi vocabulario está todavía muy limitado.
