I woke up thursday feeling a little better. The altitutde was still rough as I felt short of breath all night while sleeping. But I was not going to let that slow me down. So I took a quick shower, through my backpack on my back, and headed out to the City. Not knowing really where to go I just started walking. I spent the day in New Town mostly which is the more modern part of the City. I check out 3 or 4 parks within the City. I never would have thought that another City could rival the parks in Portland. They are layed out much different but very pretty and quite tranquil during the week. Eventually I got hungry and stopped at some hole in the wall place that was packed. Payed $3.50 ... read more

Made it through Mexican costums which took forever and found my flight. Although, the airport there was hard to navigate. I slept through my whole flight to Quito and woke up as we started our decent to the airport as the sun was rising. Ecuadorian costums was a breeze took all but 3-5 minutes. I found the taxi counter and ordered a taxi for $25 as it was 45 min - 1 hour ride into the City with traffic. The ride was very nice. And wow, was the country side beautiful. Montains, hills, trees I have never seen before, fir trees, and much more. I did my best to conversate with my driver ¨Carlos¨ who was born in raised in Quito. He was a very nice guy. Once I arrived at my hotel I got situated ... read more

Quito - Day 17 This was our last morning in Banos. We really enjoyed our visit here. The first morning at the hostel we didn't realize that breakfast was included, so we made our own. The next two mornings we were treated to rolls, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola and coffee. The staff here was very friendly and accommodating. We expected to call a taxi this morning, but the hostel manager drove us to the bus station. Today we headed back to Quito. We got to the bus station earlier than we expected, so got the 9:00am bus. The 3.5 hour ride was very reasonable ($3.50 per person), as is all transportation here. We had reservations far north in Quito, so we would be fairly near the Ofelia bus station. Tomorrow we go to Mindo, and this ... read more

Surprisingly I have had little anxiety during the past couple of days and especially today (the day I flew out). Don´t get me wrong as I was nervous but no where near what I thought I would be. Currently I have been trying my best to stay confident in my abilities to survive, be safe, and have an open heart to the cultural experience I am about to Embark on. Establishing an open heart and being able to see things from the perspectives of other cultures will be key to my travels. It is kind of funny, I just arrived in Las vegas (I can check that off my list as I have never been there before) which is my first layover and I decided to sit next to 2 couples of Latin American decent. As ... read more

On Friday we came across from Mindo to Otavalo in time to visit the famous Saturday market. Actually the market is every day, but Saturday is when it really cranks up and fills the pretty colonial town of Otavalo. It was quite an eventful drive from Mindo as the paved road was blocked for a public event, so we had to use the back roads which were dusty, narrow and steep, winding through river valleys and up over the Andes range. It was a really picturesque and enjoyably drive though a little uncertain at times (lucky we had Spanish speakers) and unsettling when at one point we traversed a densely foggy pass at 3400 metres. The markets in Otovalo are the best known handicraft markets in the Andes and have been a weekly fiesta since pre-Inca ... read more

On Tuesday we travelled 3 hours north from Quito to Mindo, on the edge of the escarpment which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Mindo is still quite high up at 1700 metres in a warm and very damp cloud forrest. The hot air from the coastal plain hits the Andes near Mindo, rises and the moisture condenses, so for much of the year the area is blanketed in dense cloud, and most days it rains in the afternoon.... We came to Mindo to see the birds and to walk in the rainforrest...... The forrest is teaming with all sorts of wildlife including sloths, frogs, spiders, possums, pumas and even an Andean bear, but the area is especially famous for its birds, which we saw lots of - quetzals, toucans, parrots, an owl and its baby, a falcon, ... read more

We landed in Quito on a Friday night, into the midst of a crazy fiesta rampaging in the square outside our guesthouse - multitudes of people, fireworks, police in numbers, helmets and riot gear, music, dancing and lots of noisy action...... In the San Fransisco square at 9pm it felt very edgy, especially when our host had suggested we not venture too far...... in Quito's old quarter, or Centro Historico as the locals call it... the fiesta, we found out, is just a warm up for an annual festival which dominates early December, leading to foundation day on the 6th; it's a time of bullfights, flamenco dancing, outdoor concerts and non stop bus-top revelling....... Ecuador's capital is a remarkable city in an extraordinary setting. Declared one of the first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites in 1978, ... read more

Upon arriving back at altitude, it was revealed that Paul’s previous stomach illness hadn’t cured itself in the Amazon and so we laid low for another day. More planning was done for our intended Galapagos adventure and we managed to find a good deal. After a minor recovery from Paul we headed for a day trip out of Quito to the Equatorial town of Mitad Del Mundo (middle of the world). Well at least that’s what it was reported as until fairly recently when GPS placed the true equator about 100m down the road. We knew it was a bit of a tourist trap but couldn’t help ourselves and posed on both the old (fake) and new (real) equator, tried to balance eggs on nails, walk heel-to-toe along the equator and generally played the good tourist ... read more

Quito - 11/26/2014 - Day 3 We both got a little sunburned yesterday. The sun is high and the air thinner, so more susceptible. Ate breakfast at the hotel, then headed out. Fresh tomato juice and papaya today. For the coffee, they give you a full cup of hot milk/cream. You then add instant coffee, cocoa, and sugar to taste. Today we decided to take the tram up the mountain (Volcan Pichincha). Our plan was to take a shuttle to the base, but because of limited Spanish we ended up on a city bus. But that's part of the adventure. Cheap ride at $.25 each. It wasn't a direct route, we drove through much of Quito before we got there. There are many buses and they are very crowded. Sometimes you see people hanging on the ... read more

Quito - 11/25/2014 - Day 2 After breakfast, we decided to take in the sites of Quito. It was a drizzly morning, so we grabbed our raincoats and took off for a walking adventure. The city is very hilly, lots of pigeons and dogs! Looking up the hill you can see a large angel statue, looking down you see the tops of red tiled roofs. Many shoe shine stalls, vendors selling their wares under umbrellas, lots of traffic and honking horns. The public transportation here consists of many cabs, buses, and streetcars. We found the businessmen here to be very well dressed, in suits and ties. Passed the Palacio del Gobierno (Governor's Palace). A group of cute little school children in uniforms was taking a a tour. The children here are adorable, dark hair and dark ... read more
