All kind of people travel. You have the single travellers, the couples, the friends, the families, and infrequently the mother-daughter pair. But it is not often you encounter the mother-son combination. The eyes stop to look, the minds wonder. We are different. Not the norm for the road. We stand out. But the reactions are invariably positive. How is it to travel with my mother? Not hard. But th... Read Full Entry

Hi Ralf, yes I can imagine it's very difficult for you both & that you both feel guilty but neither of you should and luckily you are still both able to put it to the side and enjoy your travels together!!! Lots of love Linn

No too difficult
Luckily, but it is something we have to deal with, and we have. Love Ralf

Tricky Travel!
I love your last line when you point out that while it might be tricky traveling with a mother or a friend with different budgets, it shouldn't get in the way of the sharing a wonderful experience. Like you, I'm a $15-$20/day budget traveler, while most of my friends are more like your mom. It's tricky finding that mid-point, but it can be done. I think you two struck a fine balance of which you should be righteously proud. Very well-done. This cable car in the cloud forest of Mindo looks fabulous--I can hardly wait!

Thanks
I think we have found a good way to manage our different budgets. Will you be going towards Ecuador soon?

What's important
No matter what angle you spin for this blog Ralf, what comes over loud and clear is that you are taking this trip 'cause you love your mum. When you break it down, family is what endures through all of life's journeys if one wants a happy life.

True words!
I am very happy and fortunate to have a great family, it makes life so much easier and fun.

Touring with mama :)
Hey just wanted to say that I've been travelling with my mother since 2012 as well and so far it has been a wonderful experience for me and we both created new memories along the way. And I'm sure you did that with your mom as well. So I'm glad that I found another person who likes to travel with their mother. Best of luck to your future travels :)

Thank you
Glad that you and your mum enjoy travelling together as well! Many continued happy travels together!

What is soon?
I'm a bit of a drifter, so while I thought I'd be in Ecuador a couple of years ago, I'm still in Arequipa. However, the immigration people said that it appeared I was living here (well, yes, for about 2 years), so they only gave me 3 months. So, yes, I imagine I'll be in Ecuador around mid-May when my 3 months expires here. Soon for me, but I imagine you'll be in some other exotic part of the world by then. I will be in Lima sometime between a couple of weeks to a month from now.

Ralf I think your arrangement is perfectly reasonable, if you weren't to do it the amount of time you could spend travelling with your mum would be much more limited and it's time that's important not money. Enjoy!
