Before leaving Ibarra for the Chota Valley we made several stops for supplies. This gave me a better sense of the urban layout of Ibarra and of the residents. Like all other places in Ecuador I had seen, Ibarra is a city in constant motion. Cars are bumper to bumper, people are everywhere either waiting for buses or walking quickly along the sidewalks. Even on the drive from Quito to Ibarra one rarely gets a sense they are in the countryside due to the numerous little communities and clusters of old apartments and homes that are scattered along the Pan Am Highway. We stopped for water and a few supplies that would be used in the Chota Valley that first day. We finally got on the road around 10:00 and arrived in the Chota Valley around ... read more

The first morning in Ecuador was cold. The temperatures had hovered around 40 degrees the night before and the morning was cool. This was a nice break from the 103 temps we had left behind in Kansas City the previous day. Dwayne and I met up with the rest of the group at breakfast. After the introductions and greetings, the first thing I was told was to try the orange juice. There was a glass of a slightly off color orange substance sitting at my place. I picked it up and took a drink and it didn't taste anything like orange juice. However, since I didn't yet know the sense of humor of the group I drank it and said it was good. Jeff, who I had just met said, "Really!?!?" Apparently this was a drink ... read more

From the coast we did a marathon day of bus rides, into Quito and out again to Ibarra, 3 hours north. We found a small city, fairly clean, pretty well run, lots of trees planted and the first night we found our way to Cristo de la Calle, or Christ of the streets. It was founded 12 years ago by a priest and 2 social workers, and they poured themselves and all their resources into helping kids in desperate circumstances. Eventually the church disagreed with the social focus of the priest, and they parted ways. He left the priesthood, and is now married with 3 kids and continuing to put his devotion into the program. They help nearly 200 families, and run 4 houses, each of which is set up in as much of a family ... read more

You can find my latest pictures at my Flickr Site I think my last blog left off in Santiago after the earthquake. Mariette and I had relocated to Concon on the coast. The remainder of Mariette´s stay was uncomfortable in the shadow of the earthquake, and in the frequent aftershocks that kept us on edge. By the second week after the quake, the aftershocks had diminished to one or two a day, but were still disconcerting when they happened. We were always wondering whether they would continue to grow in intensity as the original quake in Santiago had. It didn´t make for the best of vacations; we were unable to really relax with the thought of another strong quake hanging over us. Mariette flew home on March 17th, we caught a bus into Santiago, then a ... read more

He conocido muchas personas amistoso en Ecuador, y quiero rendir homenaje a ellos con este blog. Remy Davalos and his family met me Saturday at a gas station beside the Pan-American Highway, about 3 blocks from where I am living in Otavalo. Remy is an active member of the “Club de Planeadores del Ecuador”, but is not a glider pilot himself. He is a pilot for Columbia Helicopters, and flies one of those big Chinook twin-rotor jobs doing mostly oilfield work. He and his wife have two sons, about 22 and 16. The older son, David, is a glider pilot and also holds a commercial power license. We drove from Otavalo to Ibarra, where the gliding club is based, in pouring rain. It didn't look good for that day. Ecuador is probably about the last place you'd ever think about going to fly gliders, and it was certainly with me. I picked ... read more

As on my first hike to the Lagunas de Piñan I had not found a good way down, and as Anibal had suggested a good return trip ending in some hot termas I went again to Iruguincho. Anibal had said the trip could be done in 2 days on horseback. As Anibal was not around, I found a local horse guide. It took some time to locate him and to get going, but finally we had gone to the pasture, he captured and prepared the horses and off we went. We did not go that far, though.... We climbed some steep path, persuaded the horses with some difficulty to ross a river, went underneath lots of bushes and up a steep trail again. Well, and then I was just thinking 'hey, the horse is toppling over ... read more

Ok, I thought for a while whether I should post this or not. I know now all of you will think I am even more crazy than you already thought I am. But first read and then think about it and then maybe you don't find it that crazy any more. I had been wanting to do that trek for a few months now and already in April had met the prospective guide, a national park ranger, who had been recommended by Patricio. However, in April he said the páramo was still too wet and suggested I call him again in June. We subsequently spoke a number of times, but the weather was always bad, or he did not have time. Since I was running out of time now, though, I finally decided to go by ... read more
