Friday 5th December 2014 On Wednesday we moved from the hostel to the Hotel Albemarle, by the beach. One knew one was in a hotel immediately, because there was a hairdryer in the bathroom; haven´t seen one of those in weeks! We didn´t actually get to use it! We also had a balcony overlooking the sea. Wow! We backpackers really know how to rough it! Thursday was another very special day, because it was the first time we have managed to take photographs of sea lions underwater, whilst snorkelling. When swimming off the beach, they rarely come close enough to photograph, or if they do, we don´t see them. One can be swimming along, see a sea lion on the beach and the next minute they have swam past and away out to sea. So, on ... read more

The Galapagos Islands were one of our must-see destinations for the whole trip. Lots of hype and stories from people at home and while travelling had led to very high expectations of the famous islands that motivated Charles Darwin to develop his Origin of Species and convince the world of the theory of evolution. After a failed attempt to find a cruise before our amazon trip we headed back to Quito with the plan to grab a last minute trip and found a 5-day cruise abroad the San Jose (as booked for a discounted last minute rate through Ellen at galapagoslastminute.net). We flew from Quito onto San Cristobal island, to join to crew of San Jose at the port. We were greeted by a colony of sea lions lying happily on the seats, wharf, beach, street ... read more

Tuesday 2nd December 2014 When we arrived here on Isla Isabela from Santa Cruz, we planned to stay just two or three days. However, such is the beauty of this little Paradise that we are staying five days until Friday. Flights on Friday are full, except the over-priced “executive” flights, so we shall be braving 83 kilometres of ocean in a silly little speed boat once more, and paying $30 each for the pleasure of doing so! We contemplated staying until Sunday (our flight back to Quito is on Monday) but with the absence of banks or ATMs and very few places taking plastic, we need to get back to Santa Cruz and hope that the ATMs over there have some money left in them by the time we arrive on Friday evening; if not, plenty ... read more

Sunday 30thNovember 2014 Last night (and every night) we spent some time on the pier in Puerto Ayora. Every time we do so, we see some wildlife. In the green and blue lights of the pier, we have seen rays, small sharks, a turtle and several sea lions. Last night we saw a small ray, a small shark and three sea lions. After their late night swim, two of the sea lions came up on to the pier to settle down for a good night´s sleep, completely oblivious to people strolling around them. Today’s journey to Isabela Island wasn’t pleasant. We had a 5.30 a.m. alarm to leave the hostel at 6.30 to get to the dock for a 7 a.m. departure on the “ferry” to Isabela. Except it wasn’t a ferry, it was a speed ... read more

Friday 28thNovember2014 The Inland Highlands: Santa Rosa We hoped to see some giant tortoises today. We didn´t expect to see hundreds of them. The inland highland areas of Santa Cruz Island are quite lush, with untouched vegetation that the tortoises thrive on. Sadly, elsewhere, as mentioned in a previous blog, their habitat has been destroyed and numbers have decreased. Not here, however. The Santa Rosa region is an oasis for these magnificent gentle giants. One has to be careful driving along the tracks, because they don´t understand the Green Cross Code and they amble along all over the place, at leisure. We left the hostel early in the morning and went with a guide (just the two of us). He was a lovely character, but not particularly knowledgeable and informative, as one expects a guide to ... read more

Thursday 27th November 2014 We noticed that in our last blog the photographs were not reproduced correctly. All of the photos seem to have been moved slightly off-centre, and one of the Marine Iguanas has his nose chopped off; most mysterious, because the original photos are all fine. So we have included another Marine Iguana photo with this blog. There are so many of these creatures here in Santa Cruz, that we have hundreds of photos of them. We meet them on the beach, swimming with us in the sea, or they are to be found sunbathing on the pavements or walls. Yesterday we took a water taxi across the harbour and then walked along the shore. It was a dull humid day so we didn´t snorkel. Today we had to move out of our little ... read more

“The earth is not a legacy from our ancestors, but a loan from our children” Native American Traditional (quote on our bathroom wall) We have only been here twenty four hours and we have already seen more wildlife than we expected to see in a fortnight. This place is incredible! John has already taken 203 photos and Viv took 65 before the battery died (must remember to charge up every night). We have swum in a lagoon with Marine Iguanas, seen Giant Tortoises, Land Iguanas, Booby Birds (but not the blue-footed ones yet), Pelicans, Cormorants, a small Ray, Sea Lions and numerous Darwin Finches of different colours and sizes. We haven´t hardly started yet, not having left the town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, where we are staying. We left Quito early ... read more

Saturday 18th October Today we flew into Baltra airport on Santa Cruz island, Galápagos. We Had to pay $10 to the customs desk, get our bags checked and pick up forms before going to the check in counter. On arrival to the Galapagos, we had to pay $100 each at the counter before exiting the terminal. We had to catch a bus then a ferry then another bus to finally make it to Puerto Ayora. This came to $3 each for just over an hour of travel. We met a cool girl Katia from Belgium on the bus and she can speak fluent Spanish which was super handy. She booked at the cheapest accommodation online called 'best homestay' for $20 USD and it was awful. We hadn't booked but went to Los Amigos which is on ... read more

1000 kms off the Ecuador Coast lie several small islands. Together they are known as the Galapagos Islands and this is where I´ve been the past two weeks. Typically when one thinks the Galapagos Islands they think nature, rich pensionsers and well off honeymooners and as 90% of my flight from Guayquil consisted of the last two groups, this only served to reinforce my expectations! However Galapagos really took me by suprise, the nature and scenery was spectacular but all the other stuff I did not expect ! ARRIVAL Travelling solo and having done little to no research of the islands meant I had little to go on when I arrived Sunday evening the 26th of October. One thing that stood out though was the prices - between double and triple for supermarket, pharmacy good etc. ... read more

We took the bus from Cuenca to Guayaquil and spent one night before heading to the airport for our flight to the Galapagos islands. We arrived at the airport nice and early and worked our way through the various queues; bag check, immigration and check in. Eventually we were on our flight to Baltra island with our free upgrade to first class! The Galapagos islands are 1,000km from mainland Ecuador and consist of 13 major islands, 6 small islands and more than 107 islets and rocks. From the airport we took a bus, then a boat and then another bus to Puerto Ayora, the main town of approximately 20,000 people. Our first priority after checking into our hostel in Puerto Ayora was to book a boat tour. We left it until we arrived in the islands ... read more
