North America » United States December 10th 2014

We arrived at Newark airport and had vague ideas of how to get to Anges house in Brooklyn. We ended up meeting a lovely American lady who showed us how to work the subway and took us most of the way there, it's pretty straight forward once you know how it works. We saw some colourful characters on our tube rides, which made for some interesting people watching. Ange was living in a little apartment in Brooklyn. It was so good to see her and she fed us up with epic food and clothed me as I had no warm clothes apart from my puffer. Wow it was bitterly cold. We loved cruising around New York, the first day we spent shopping on Broadway. I didn't have any luck but Mikey picked up quite a few ... read more

South America » Ecuador December 10th 2014

Thursday 13th November-2nd December On our last day at Black Sheep Inn, we went for a canyon rim walk without a guide but with a whole bunch of other people staying at the inn. We all had different instruction books, some with photos of how to complete the track. Pretty fun trying to figure it all out and such a beautiful walk, the views were amazing. We so so loved our time at the Inn, it was one of our favourite spots. Friday, we caught the Inn's taxi to Sigchos, a village nearby, and then waved down a bus heading towards the coast. We were aiming for a tiny town called Ayampe. It was a whole day travelling. We caught two taxis and four buses to get there! We were pretty stoked we managed to figure ... read more

South America » Ecuador November 13th 2014

Tuesday 28th September We used the free bikes and went to the museum. Had lunch for $2.25 which was an epic soup and then meat with rice and veges and juice. The museum was so so random. There were real shrunken human heads in display units. The indigenous people used to kill their enemies, remove the skull, boil the head and then reshape it to be a miniature head and wear it around their neck. Gross. Wednesday 29th We went on a tour with the hostal to the market which was so incredible. So much produce of every kind. So many exotic fruits with amazing colours. We stocked up on fruit and all sorts of odds and ends for our hike and caught the bus to the Cajas national park for $1.50. Such a beautiful place 3950m ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos November 13th 2014

Saturday 18th October Today we flew into Baltra airport on Santa Cruz island, Galápagos. We Had to pay $10 to the customs desk, get our bags checked and pick up forms before going to the check in counter. On arrival to the Galapagos, we had to pay $100 each at the counter before exiting the terminal. We had to catch a bus then a ferry then another bus to finally make it to Puerto Ayora. This came to $3 each for just over an hour of travel. We met a cool girl Katia from Belgium on the bus and she can speak fluent Spanish which was super handy. She booked at the cheapest accommodation online called 'best homestay' for $20 USD and it was awful. We hadn't booked but went to Los Amigos which is on ... read more

South America » Colombia October 21st 2014

October 7th-18th Suprise suprise our plans have changed again! We decided to only spend a week in Colombia as it takes such a long time to bus anywhere. We figured we will do Ecuador really well and then Colombia really well another time. I've added some photos at the start from our time in Batopilas. We flew out from Chihuahua city and landed in Bogota, Colombia. We stayed at the most amazing hostel its called 12:12. We met a guy called Isaac, who is the first Kiwi we've met on our travels, on the plane and he joined us for a few days hanging out in Bogota. He is so classic so we had a great time. We weren't overwhelmed with Bogota, just a big gritty city. We enjoyed checking out the gold museum with artifacts ... read more

North America » Mexico October 6th 2014

Saturday 27th September We didn't find a lot of info about visiting the Copper Canyons independently rather than on an expensive tour. We were quoted 10,000 NZD for 10 days with one tour company! Therefore, I'll list a few more names and more transport details and costs to help out future travellers. We stayed the night at Hotel y Hostel Guerrero in El Fuerte. It's 500 pesos a night for a private room with Internet and an ensuite. This also includes breakfast. We caught an old American school bus just up the road from the hotel at 7:40am which took 10 minutes to get to the train station and only cost 22 pesos. We caught the first class train at 8:20am. The second class trains are half price and are the same thing except without a ... read more

North America » Mexico September 27th 2014

Thursday 18th September: Today was one of those awful travel days where you spend hours and hours on the internet trying to figure out where to go and how to get there and feel like you're getting no-where. We spent a few hours last night and then the whole day today on the internet! So frustrating. We decided to up-end our plans completely and head to the Copper Canyon in the North of Mexico. Getting there was another problem to deal with. We first looked at flying which was viable until we found out it was $50 NZD just to get to the airport at one end, plus accommodation etc which adds up. We then looked at an overnight bus but it had gone up to $124 NZD each for a 13 hour ride to Mexico ... read more

North America » Mexico September 16th 2014

Sunday 7th August: Slow start today, getting organised for our move to Mazunte. Had a laughing fit with Mikey when he wouldn't believe me that Vampire bats are real. The resulting google images and facts was hilarious. We caught a collectivo taxi into town in the late afternoon and had a yummy lunch of soup and tortillas and then caught the taxi to the junction to Mazunte called San Antonio and then caught another one to Mazunte. It took just over an hour and it only cost 100 pesos for the both of us! We LOVE Mazunte. As soon as we drove in we loved it. Its small and quaint and full of palm trees and native forest. The streets are cobbled and there are loads of trendy eateries and shops hidden away as well as ... read more

North America » Mexico August 27th 2014

Wednesday 27th August: We went out of town today to a village called Teotitlan, which is about 40 minutes out of Oaxaca. Reyna, our Zapotec teacher, was awesome. She has a huge outdoor, original Zapotec kitchen, within her family property. She gave us woven baskets each and we walked down to the local daily market. It was incredible, there were so many gorgeous wee old Zapotec ladies walking around wearing their traditional garb of hand stitched aprons, head scarves and carrying woven baskets (Mum you would have LOVED to see and do this with us). They were all so short, I was head and shoulders above most! We picked up all the fresh produce we needed. I noticed Reyna greeted her friends and aquatainces with a different greeting. She explained that If she knew someone really ... read more

North America » Mexico August 27th 2014

Saturday 23rd August: Today was a loooonnnnggg travel day from Cuba. We slept awkwardly on the flight for two and a half hours to Mexico City. Mikeys knees were jammed into the seat in front (Hamo, you would have been in hell). We caught a taxi to the bus terminal and caught a bus to Oaxaca which took 6 hours and was EXACTLY 6 hours with no stops. We were starving when we arrived. The scenery over the trip was so amazing though, all the mountains, forests and cacti. We booked into a hostel and we are staying in a dorm of 10 beds! We came across the Zocolo (main centre) and there is a market on until September. The food options were awesome, Mikey was losing it with excitement. His favourite food is Mexican ... read more
