Santa Cruz

Lonely planet:
Isla Santa Cruz (Indefatigable) The island of Santa Cruz has the largest and most developed town in the Galapagos; it's a destination in itself, full of visitor sites, easily accessible beaches, remote highlands in the interior and a base for adventurous activities far from the tourism trail.
El Chato Tortoise Reserve & Rancho Permiso Near Santa Rosa, is El Chato Tortoise Reserve, where you can observe giant tortoises in the wild.
Next to the reserve is Rancho Permiso, a private ranch owned by the Devine family. This place often has dozens of giant tortoises, and you can wander around at will and take photos for a fee.

Landschildpad in 'binnenmeertje' Puerto Ayora by road, one can turn either west on the main road continuing to Isla Baltra or east on a road leading about 2km to the
lava tubes. These underground tunnels are more than a kilometer in length and were formed by the solidifying of the outside skin of a molten-lava flow. When the lava flow ceased, the molten lava inside the flow kept going, emptying out of the solidified skin and thus leaving tunnels.
Charles Darwin Research Station About a 20-minute walk by road northeast of Puerto Ayora, the Charles Darwin Research Station can also be reached by dry landing from Academy Bay. It contains a national-park information center; an informative museum in the Van Straelen Exhibition Center; a baby-tortoise house with incubators, where you can see hatchlings and young tortoises; and a walk-in adult tortoise enclosure, where you can meet the Galapagos giants face to face. The tiny tortoises in the baby-tortoise house are repatriated to their home islands when they weigh about 1.5kg (or are about four years old) - some 2000 have been repatriated so far.

We willen allebei wel op de foto Galapagos, is a surprise to most visitors, who don't expect to find anything but plants and animals in the islands. Puerto Ayora looks and feels like a fairly prosperous mainland Ecuadorian coastal town, that is if it weren't for the sea lion, iguana and albatross or two that lounge around the waterfront. Most of the hotels, restaurants and tourist facilities line Avenida Charles Darwin and the airport is on Isla Baltra, aroung an hour away to the north.
