After a trip into the depth of the Amazon Daylin and I headed to another town in the Amazon called Tena. Tena is known to be the number one spot in Ecuador for white water rafting, because of its proximity to the Napo River. Out hostal duena put us in touch with her nephew who ran a rafting agency and we met up with the rest of the rafters early Friday morning. Luckily, only two other girls were on our trip, making our first experience rafting very intimate. I was raining that morning, and we were riding in the back of a pick-up truck to the river all four of us shivering. When we got to the river, we helped with the set up and got to know our crazy guide Tarquino. We did a few ... read more

... read more

The week after the volunteer program ended, I was in the oriente with Daylin and Teresa, one of the volunteers. The Oriente is the Amazon part of Ecuador and we stayed in an area called Cuyabeno, 80 km from the Columbian border. We got there on Saturday the 5th late at night, and our guides weren’t there to meet us as a result of miscommunication. The lodge is so secluded that the guides didn’t get a message about our bus time change. When we were out of the bus, we saw the canoe that was supposed to meet up wasn’t there, so we looked for a person to ask for directions and an old man came up to us claiming the guides sent him. We followed him to his shack, where he needed to get some ... read more

I love Ecuador... We´ve gone from the Beach... 8 hours and we were in Quito... then another 8 hours and we were in Lago Agrio - a jumping off point to the Primary rainforest of Cuyabeno nature reserve! Well it was another 4 hours on the this rickety bus and it was very bouncy to the bridge where we got on a motorised canoe for a 3 hour boat ride to our jungle lodge! We arrived in Lago Agrio at 5am after going on the night bus, so we were pretty knackered. We met the rest of our group - 3 couples (2 french, 1 french-canadian) and a spanish girl. It turns out that everyone speaks French better than English - except Cam and I. I can follow the French but every word I try and ... read more

We just got back from the oriente or la selva or the jungle. What amazing trip. I am a little melancholy now that we are back in Quito. We met so many wonderful people and had so many new experiences. The first day we arrived we went out with our group and our guide for a little trip up the river. We didn´t see very many animals, but we saw many birds, and many many morpho butterflies. God those are brilliant. Our group was absolutely fantastic. It was all women except for Dad and our guide, Romulo. There was a group of four brits. traveling together, two Canadian girls my age, a women from Sweden, and then Dad and I. The brits and the girls from Canada were hillarious, and we all had a blast together. ... read more

I made it to my volunteer station safely. No bus issues. Getting accustomed to life in Ecuador. It is so nice to be able to stay put for a while. My home base is an hour bus ride from Tena, where you can get an omlette for $.50!! (the bus has to cross a stream sans bridge on the way here). I live in a wood cabin with one other girl from the US. Most of the people here, not surpisingly, are in college. Yes, I am twice as old as some of them. (sigh). I feel it too, when we go hiking through the jungle, sinking into mud piles, crossing streams by delicately traversing fallen logs, (lost my balance and fell in once), ascending and descending earthen stairs formed by tree roots and ducking under ... read more

After another couple of days in Quito we went to Tena.. back into the Amazon and have had an experience like no other! We went to a jungle lodge in the middle of the Amazon and went canyoning, climbing through small crevices in canyons. It was really fun, even if a bit frightening at some points, especially in the caves with about 100 bats flying at us! We saw lots of exotic plants and medicinal ones, including a plant that has bark which is good for malaria and a seed that is taken as an oral contraceptive, only 3 times a year. The fruit from the tree can be eaten too. It was very interesting, just how many different plants there are.. including girls best friend - cocoa. The cocoa fruit is really Delicious. We went ... read more

As if one session of mud climbing was not enough we went on Ali´s waterfall walk! Basically, he owns a huge plot of land and has 3 waterfalls all of his very own and it´s about a 3ish hour round trip to see all of them. Feeling that we had more than recovered from the Rum and Coke hangover 4 of us (Hannah, Andrea, Ren and me) decided to do the waterfall round trip. We took a bit of a map with us and had a great time walking up the river (those of you who have done Prevelli gorge in Crete know exactly what I´m talking about here) and traversing vertical mud slopes. Got a bit lost but that´s what happens when you put an American in charge of map reading Ren! Still we managed ... read more

So on Sunday we made a massive detour out of Baños to go back to Ali´s (Hannah´s cousin) Magic Roundabout hostel - reason being to party with the locals. Hannah left on Saturday to go back early so Andrea and me made the journey on our own on Sunday - and what a journey it was! I tell you it is not just Sunday buses in England which are rubbish - lateness, no connections and dodgy roads all add to the nightmare that is Ecuadorian bus travel. Andrea and me thinking that if we left at 9am we would have plenty of time to arrive - how wrong we were - 8 and a half hours later we turn up to the party a bit more than fashionably late! Climbing up the hill in the dark ... read more
