Well, a journey and a half to Banos, what with a blockage due to volcanic eruptions and the (actually very nice) peasants revolting about their lot. The white knuckle ride for the end of the journey turned out to be in a 4 x 4 over a lava field - no photes, too scary to take out the camera. All in all a very interesting journey here. The Posada del Arte is an unusual little hotel with a great view, and very comfy. Maybe it´s the warmer weather down here- only 6500 ft up. This morning we were up early, as always and had a splendid walk in the hills around Banos. Quito seems a lifetaime away already, it's so esay and relaxing in Banos, just a small town in the foot of a volcano. ... read more

So, we have now been away for 100 days. My how time flies. Having said that, we've done tonnes already and let's hope this continues for the next 265 days. On this milestone day, Gemma set a milestone of her own... On our 100th day, Gemma visited her 40th country. What a well-travelled young lady. And that number will certainly be growing over the rest of our trip. Ed is marooned on 30, having never been abroad during his schooldays as he was forced to work down a mine during the holidays. It is worth pointing out that this blog entry is the second attempt. It was mostly written when something inexplicable happened and the text disappeared for ever. Add to this the fact that the internet cafe we are in has speakers for each PC ... read more

The last day of our Amazon adventure and what better way to spend it than with a bit of whitewater rafting. This part of Ecuador hosted the 2005 rafting world championships so we thought we'd get some decent rapids here. Luckily, we're both experienced rafters - Gemma went once on a family holiday 10 years ago and Ed went on a whitewater rafting holiday with his school in 1990. Yet again we struck gold with the weather and had a day of glorious sunshine, which is by no means an everyday event here. The rafting was absolutely amazing and one of our best days so far. We fell out once or twice and ended the day in pain, but for pure fun it'd be hard to beat. The company we went with is called 'Rios ... read more

The Golden Rule for today was to remember that the correct term is 'indigenous community' rather than 'natives'. We started by crossing the river in a dugout canoe. It had room for 6 and takes a month or more to build. We were thinking how annoying it would be to make a mistake late on; a single careless swing of an axe 4 weeks in could be disastrous given that it's constructed from just a single tree. Ed knows this feeling - when the guide left us for 15 minutes on yesterday's jungle walk, he also left his machete. Ed took the opportunity to build himself a spear, but just as he was putting the finishing touches to the sharp tip, the finely crafted tip was accidentally sliced off. Anyway, we had an hour and ... read more

Putting on wet and smelly clothes was not a highlight of today, but it was worth it as our morning activity was 'canyoning'. We started with an hour long walk learning very interesting facts about different plants and creatures, their medicinal qualities or their uses in rituals and so on. All very interesting and it is impressive how much the people here use from the jungle. We even tried some lemon ants - and it is amazing how much they actually do taste of lemons, a bit like lemon sherbet! Then we walked down into a river bed and into primary rain forest (you can tell this because there are no yuka or banana plants growing there) and followed it for about 2 hours, climbing over bolders and fallen trees. We even had to squeeze ... read more

N.B - there are no photos as of yet, but please return soon as when we have a more reliable internet connection we will not disappoint. Well where do we start? After a hearty breakfast we prepared ourselves in t-shirts, long trousers and wellington boots (provided - we certainly didn't pack any!) for our 4 hour adventure. We headed out into the pouring rain and into the jungle. 10 minutes into the walk we were shown a tree whose fruit is used to decorate faces at festival times, and we do just that - photos provided. Next we came across a raging river which we slowly make our way up, for about an hour, overcoming fallen trees, an ever rising volume of water (as it is still pouring down with rain) and waterfalls. So much ... read more

The project here is going really well. The people are all really nice. I can even understand a little of what the priest who runs it says now (he speaks really fast and has got a thick Spanish accent). The kids are great however I am always tired. It is pretty difficult trying to control children and explain things to them in a language you don´t speak much of! I like Puyo. It´s really small and rains alot but hey it´s the Oriente. I have made a couple of Ecuadorian friends here as well. This weekend I went to Tena for the night and then to Mishaulli. This is a really small town on the Napo. I went walking in the forest and to a mini waterfall. It was very pretty. I then sat on the ... read more

So i finished up my time at Amazoonico. I liked it so much that i will try to come back at the end of my trip. Spent my birthday lying in a hammock listening to an Amazonian rainstorm. the best. The experience really defies explanation, so i will just note a few entries from my journal to let you soak it up with me. 9-11-06 Love it here. The work is hard, my knees hurt from carrying the weight of heavy buckets and fruit on my back, the itching from the sandflies is enough to drive anyone mad, but after work and on days off, i just love it here- lying in a hammock, swimming in the river, bathing in the waterfall, hanging out by candelight around the dinner table- perfect! At night you can almost ... read more

On Sunday I went to near Rio Verde. I first went on a cable car thing across the valley which was pretty cool. Fastest moving cable car ever! After that I went to Rio Verde. There I visited the waterfall. Honestly I never imagined it could be that big and spectacular. Standing anywhere near it you got absolutely drenched!! Then I went to a nice little bar overlooking the waterfall to enjoy a nice realxing beer. It was a really good relaxing weekend which is what I needed after a week of total Spanish!!... read more

After getting back into Quito for a night, I headed off for the Jungle town of Tena. Tena is about 5 hours by bus from Quito and is considered the rafting and kayaking capital of Ecuador. We loaded all our gear onto the bus and were off for the Amazon Jungle. As we journied from the mountains into the Jungle, the heat and humidity started to seep through the windows on the bus. We arrived in Tena and it was blistering hot. We had a few hours of daylight to spare so we checked into our hostal and got a few hours of practice paddling in the river. We practiced a few of the paddling techniques as well as practiced our wet exits, which reminded me of pulling the practice ripcord from skydiving. When the sun ... read more
