Hi, By the title, you can already understand that this time it is Lilach. Be patient with me, and by the end of this entry you will know what is round and hard, and no, it is not for adults only.... Quilotoa Lagoon is located inside the crater of a sleeping volcano. It is a very remote area in the midst of the Ecuadorian Andes. To get there, we took a bus from Quito to Latacunga, the main city in the region. Upon arrival to Latacunga we learned that on the next morning (Sunday) there is a market day in Pujili, a small town not too far from Latacunga. We have decided to slightly change our plans, go first to Pujili and from there continue to Quilotoa - sleep the night in Quilotoa and make the ... read more

My Spanish teacher Paulina took us on a fieldtrip to a very very small village about 4 hours outside of Quito. Here the famous volcano "Quilatoa" is found, or as some people know it "the volcano that imploded". Instead of erupting outwards it collapsed, creating a circular fresh water lagoon filled with blue-green water. Ecuador's current president Correa had a special connection with the village, and lived among the Indigenous for many years.... read more

Sunday eve sat in the dorm alone at Hostal Tiana resigned to the fact that I won't be able to do the Quilotoa loop as I can't find someone to go with, there are tours around but wanted to do it without paying for a guide. Then as luck would have it, 2 guys checked in, Frenchies! The boys told me of their plan to hike the loop tomorrow so I asked them if I could tag along with them, and now there are 3 of us, sweet! The fellas, Julian and Clement are travelling Ecuador for 1 month, Julian from Toulose can't understand English very well so I have to talk slow, not a problem though, Clement living at the mo' in French Guiana until his contract finishes and goes back home to mainland France. ... read more

Ecuador, Quito,09-10-1990. Nothing can distrup my good mood this morning walking through a still foggy Quito devoid of traffic at this early hour. These Ecuadorians are definitely not early risers. I feel a bit like hiking the streets of a past era, a pre-conquistadores time though the whitewashed and red-tiled houses, the many colonial churches reminding me that the times of complete seperations of the American continents from power hungry medieval European rulers are a far away reality. Leaving the Quito historic centre behind, I enter a residential area full with modern looking shopping malls, embassies and prosperous looking banks. Obviously these are the middle- and upper-class residential neighborhoods and under normal circumstance of no importance to an intripid backpacker on the South-American Gringo Trail like me... When finally I make it to the airport, still ... read more

We spent 3 days in the highlands, at and above 3300 metres... * First off we visited Sasquili and their local Thursday markets....more for the locals than the tourists with everything from beautiful fabrics and clothes, old tools, food markets, dubbed CDs, knife sharpeners, delicious corn bread and fruit and older men fixing clothes on old style 'singer'sewing machines * Next stop was Quilitoa, a tiny village high in the mountains 2 hours away (3850 metres), a village with a stunning, serene and peaceful crater lagoona 400 metres below - and our fingers were crossed we didnt get hit with altitude sickness again....the climb back up a steep sandy slope was somewhat of a challenge! The 2 hour hike was our warm up for the hike to come.... * Our hostel here was with a lovely ... read more

Day 754 (22.04.09) We'd been promised incredible scenery, remote highland villages, Andean markets and interesting transport if we tackled what has become known as the Quilotoa Loop (a circuit starting and ending in the town of Latacunga that heads into the Andes and has Quilotoa as more or less it's central point.) Now we're not normally ones to believe everything our guide book says but this time it certainly delivered on its promises and led us through a spectacular couple of days on the loop. Leaving Latacunga early our first stop was for some breakfast in the market town of Pujili. The colourful market was in full swing and we stopped in to have a nose around and buy some fruit before jumping back onto another bus to continue on our way. The journey to Zumbahua ... read more

I vividly remember when I was first thinking about travelling to South America 1 year ago when I came across a picture of Quilotoa Crater. It was a stunning photograph and it kind of filled me with excitement about the type of adventure I was going to have when I went to the Latin Continent. So no surprises it was top on my list of places to visit in Ecuador. As soon as my plane landed at the Mariscal Sucre International Airport I was secretly counting down the days of when I was going to Quilotoa. I tried to organise a weekend away between my weekly spanish lessons but it soon became apparent that I would need more time to visit the crater and also walk around the surrounding villages. So on the Monday follwing Quito ... read more

The Lonely Planet describes a journey around the Quilotoa Loop as "a little confusing" - Ha! Your not kidding. After being dumped on the outskirts of Latacunga, catching a local bus with goats on the roof, daring some of the most dangerous roads in South America and getting completely lost hiking from Laguna Quilotoa to Chugchilán, I am just happy to find my way back to civilisation in one piece! I first found out about the remote Quilotoa Loop from another backpacker in Banos. Like every other traveller I consulted the The Lonely Planet to find out more. It was obvious that the Loop was well and truly off the gringo trail because the details in the Lonely Planet were very vague, although it does get one thing right - "Everyone is wondering around completely lost ... read more

This weekend we made another excursion outside of Quito to the mountainous region of Quilitoa. There are a number of small towns that make up the ¨Quilitoa Loop¨and we were able to visit three of them in two days. Friday morning we took a 2 hour bus to the town of Latacunga where we walked to another bus station, wanting to go to Quilitoa, and they immediately threw us on a bus that was completely full. There were at least 10 people standing in the aisle and we had to stand for an hour and a half in the aisle until some people got off. After 2 hours we arrived in the tiny town of Quilitoa, pretty much a couple hostals, a restaurant, a store and a dozen or so houses. We dropped our stuff off ... read more
