Refuge a 4800
Dans l'hostel
Bab with her new friends m la ou on a passe la nuit
Sommet a 5900 m
A 1h on etait partis.
On etait content.

Cotopaxi is a volcano at an altitude of 5900m about 2 hours south of quito. We decided to climb it. We spent a few nights before hand in a nice country hostel at 3500m getting ready for the climb. The hostel was good fun with plenty of interesting people and lots to do. It also had an amazing view of the volcano which we awoke to both nights we stayed there, which was great for getting motivated for the climb. The hostel had four dogs which hiked around with us on anothe nearby volcano as we prepared for our big challange which was quite a different trekking experience. As you can see
there are lots of volcanos in equador, I hope for the equadorians sake all these volcanos dont blow at the same time.
On day one of the big climb we got picked up by our guide robinson at midday from our hostel and drove to a carpark on the side of the mountain at 4500m ( so yes we cheated a little bit). From here we hiked up to a refuge where we left most of our stuff and then headed up to 5000m with our guide to practice walking on a glacier with crampons and and ice pick. We headed back down to the refuge at some dinner and at 7pm we were in bed. We awoke at midnight got some brekkie, got ready and started climbing at 1am. It was the hardest thing i have ever done in my life. At about 8am, 7 hours later we made the summit. The weather was perfect and through the night the ¾ moon lit the way for us (we also had torches and the guide knew the way) and we could actually see thunder storms below. On the summit the skies were blue, the sun was shining and the views
were amazing, i couldnt really enjoy this though as i was lying down thinking about how the hell i would make it down as i had no energy left. The last hour upwards was hell and on the summit Bab force fed me some chocolate which i could hardly swallow. But luckilly it gave me a bit of a boost and i made it back down. Great experience but will be a while before i consider another summit as high…..
